Trump also didn't protect us from space aliens, invasion by ancient Romans, the next natural disaster, or anything else that hasn't happened. I'm not one to believe blindly in his every move, but this criticism is unjustified. No one thought this would pan out that the way that it did. Stop criticizing him for not being prescient. There was a lot more needed besides stopping flights from China. Trump should have been laying the groundwork for a meaningful response. Instead he minimized the situation.

Here are the big headline items for those who can't or won't follow links:

--Not initially taking the virus seriously, and even downplaying it
--Not being prepared for mass testing before the virus spread
--Giving mixed, inaccurate messaging
--Not doing enough to counteract the hospital equipment shortages
--Using racially inflammatory language to describe the virus and regularly attacking his political opponents
--Trying to pull back social distancing before public health experts say it has a chance to work

Trump has fixed *some* of these errors to some extent esp. regarding his messaging, and pushing back the proposed Easter re-opening date to the end of April. But on other fronts (lack of testing, hospital equipment shortages), the deficiencies are still glaring and are placing immense pressure on our medical system.

Other countries (e.g. South Korea) got their initial responses right and successfully flattened the curve despite being hit earlier than the U.S. They have proven sufficient information about the virus existed to support action. Yet we didn't.

And the fact Trump was calling the coronavirus panic "their new hoax" as recently as 4.5 weeks ago is a good sign of why we didn't.

You have only said "what meaningful groundwork IS NOT" you have not explained, and no one in the liberal has, what Trump should have done.

You complained yesterday about people playing Monday Morning Quaterback with CBS, but here you are saying "Trump shouldn't have done X,Y,Z..." But you never explained what he should have done.

You also ignore the reality that data changes weekly. So when Trump said he wanted to re-open the country, it was based on the data at the time. You also supported re-opening the economy around that time as well. But now of course, you changed your mind, but I guess Trump can't do that.

In hindsight, you can criticize President Trump for not moving fast enough, but understand that he was going on what he was being told by the media and others.

In January, the WHO declared that there was no evidence of human to human transmission.

Throughout Jan. and Feb, the media and others were still saying the flu was more dangerous.

On Jan 26, when he set up his task force, what were the Democrats doing? They were still trying to impeach him. The only thing the media said about his task force was that it was too "white".

On Jan 31, when he stopped flights from China, the Democrats were still trying to impeach him. The only thing the Democrats and the Media said was the stoppage was not necessary and called him a xenophobe.

In fact, it wasn't until March 11 that the WHO declared it a pandemic. He immediately stopped flights from Europe, and all the Democrats and the Media said he was that he overreacted.

So yeah, things could have been handled better, but it is not all on President Trump. At least he did something, while the Democrats have done nothing but ridicule and whine at every step. They even held up the relief package.

Impeachment took no time out of Trump’s schedule. Zero. He booked himself an unusually packed schedule that week to make himself look busy, but none of it involved appearing in the Senate to answer the charges.

He watched FOX News from home and tweeted about it. That’s a disgrace.

And a whole month after impeachment (4.5 weeks ago), Trump was still holding campaign rallies calling coronavirus panic “their new hoax” and comparing it to, you guessed it, Russiagate and Ukrainegate.

The President has access to more classified information than the media. He should have been sounding the alarm first.

And yet; he wasn’t even taking his cues from the media! Trump was blaming the media and crafting a counter-narrative of optimism: until even he was forced to acknowledge reality and no longer could.

We should expect our President should be able to walk and chew gum at the same time. And if he rubs his nose in the mud, or otherwise fails to protect the American public, he will have to answer for it, from the opposing party and the media.

That’s what happens in a free democratic society.

Yeah, whatever. I still think he did a reasonable job despite the media and the do-nothing Democrats, and so does most of the country.

Travel to Europe was stopped shortly after China. It was in the USA 8 days before it was in most of Europe. Europe was not an issue until it was.

The truth is that this thing is present and spreading well before it becomes “an issue“ and the Trump Admin had the necessary information to nip this in the bud but chose to be mostly reactive to public opinion and the market rather than acting decisively. So here we are, with more projected cases and deaths than the nation where it started and all the immediately surrounding nations combined. Saying they did everything right is ridiculous. They haven’t done everything wrong either, but a lot of people will die and millions more will get sick as a direct result of the slight delays in response. Such is the weight of the presidency; this is why the job ages people so quickly. I don’t know if what he says is maintaining his brand rather than a reflection of genuine feeling, but if Trump has no guilt or remorse for the effects of his response, then he’s not just a terrible president - he’s a terrible human being. I’d like to think he’s not so far gone that he doesn’t understand his responsibility here, and that the actions he’s been taking are about saving lives first and foremost rather than salvaging public opinion or market strength.

Yes, this started in China. Yes, China withheld information early on, and bears a fair amount of blame for the spread of the virus beyond its borders.

China is not to blame for the administration’s handling of this. They are not to blame for the spreading of falsehoods that directly contradict medical experts. They are not to blame for any choice made in the US.
