More likely he donates it to himself

Hyperbolic nonsense. He donates all but $1 of his salary, because frankly he doesn't need it. He only takes the single dollar because when he said he was going to donate ALL of it, lefties started hypocritically setting up a stink about how "unpatriotic" he was being, refusing to take a salary that was constitutionally mandated.

And we kniw he's making many more millions getting away with abusing the enoluments clause.

What is true that Representatives are, in majority, not millionaires.

They are in the Senate! Almost entirely, with some even approaching billionaire status. But in the Representatives, while some have accrued a great deal of wealth, the majority of them cannot maintain two residences - one in their home district and one in DC - on a Congressional salary alone. So, yes, lobbyists can use that to make their offers mighty tempting to people who want to serve in Congress but find their salary package inadequate for how that works.

Having said that, you might have some ideas about how to solve that situation that differs from Ocasio-Cortez's proposals - and, fine, I'm not going to argue that. But that doesn't mean that part of what she's saying isn't true.

If representatives don’t like the salary that comes with the job, don’t take the job in the 1st place. That’s what the rest of us do.
0 ups, 5y
It's similar to having a job that sends you to an industry convention in another state, only less useful.

Oh, excellent! So in your world, when a representative gets elected to DC, they immediately have to move out of your district and are almost guaranteed to lose touch with what goes on in the place they're supposed to represent.

Yes, sign my gullible ass up.

Many rent their home district home out anyway and it pays the mortgage. They are never home unless it’s to campaign and they are on the road anyway.
0 ups, 5y
Or they can rent an apartment in DC. The point is, they should have taken that into consideration when they ran for office.

A single cross-country flight of Air Force one costs more than the Presidents entire annual salary. When does he plan on giving that up? And never mind the costs of maintaining the White House, Secret Service, and every other perk the President receives along with the job. Sorry, I call complete fertilizer on this cherrypicked subfact. The $400K salary is a drop in the bucket compared to the complete compensation package.

First of all, Air Force One is not compensation, it is a requirement of the Secret Service for his protection. His living in the WH is also required by law. These are not perks or compensation, they are part of the job.

So then, please name another President that donated all their salary.

I'll wait.

Not too mention that no president ever received as many public death threats as Trump has. From unhinged lefty pukes.

Living in the White House is required by law? Citation, source, please?

Good question. I did some more checking. While customary, it is not required for the President to live in the WH. But that is where his office is and where the West Wing is, so it cuts down on the commute and security costs.

Plus, While rent is free, just about nothing else is. The president and first lady pay for their food, parties, vacations, butlers, housekeepers, ushers... and at Ritz Carlton prices. If they want to bring someone on Air Force One who isn't in the official traveling delegation, they have to reimburse the American people the equivalent of first-class airfare for the flight.

Also not accurate. The President & First Lady pay the bills only for their *private* meals, parties, etc. The day-to-day business of keeping house (100 staffers at $4M/year) is covered by the government. Likewise, the food etc. for any official meeting or function is fully on the taxpayers' dime. https://www.businessinsider.com/financial-perks-president-of-the-united-states-2018-7

Only mega rich people should run for office and represent the people. We can all be sure of fair decisions that way and that they will always act in the best interests of the people, not just their friends and business associates.

Maybe representatives shouldn’t expect their job to make them mega rich and live within their means. Then they might be more apt to act in the best interest of the people who do the same.
0 ups, 5y
That would be good but then again that is what all representative expect. To use their connections to foreign leaders and business to make them wealthy either in office or when they leave. Bernie Sanders has millions in the bank the same as George W Bush.

Yeah, cause only rich people help out their friends?
0 ups, 5y
Yes of course but huge difference. "Friends at Lockheed Martin"..... Hey Trump some people don't want us to sell arms to Saudi Arabia but the contract is worth billions. You scratch our back and we're scratched yours eh?

So basically your tax dollars at work, making politicians and their rich friends richer. Ever met a 20 year career politician that is not wealthy? (and that goes for all sides)
