They've been making it work here since the mid 1770s when we stopped sending all our taxes to keep the British Crown nice and fat. In fact, the USA was practicing it while evey other country on Earth (except Haiti, France, Latin America and Russia after their revolutions) would still be giving their money to royalty for the next century and a half.
That's right, the United States of America (unofficially) invented socialism.
