It’s almost like the majority of people live in places like NY and CA! WhaAAA?
Also, republicans have lost all but 1 popular since 1992, but won 3 of the presidencies. Obviously, that wasn’t the will of the people.

Obviously you don't know the reason behind the system...

Yeah so the elite could select the president instead of the common folk. Read Federalist 68

No, it was to keep a few states from determining the rulers of the entire country. Originally the state legislatures did the votes so you would elect the state reps and they would determine who was president. The popular vote had nothing to do with it.

This is just like dems wanting to pack the Supreme Court or remove the filibuster... they're also complaining about the 1st and 2nd Amendments... Americans know who wants to trash the Constitution...

It was to deny tyranny by top population states being imposed on people living in different states. What’s good for California may not be good for Nebraska, etc.

Mhm but this is for the president, not representatives or congresspeople or anybody else

Exactly, the leader of the country shouldn’t be picked by New York, Chicago and California.

‘The leader of the country shouldn’t get represented with 33% of the votes if 33% of the votes came from the same general area’

Define general area? And 33% of votes? What president was elected with 33% of the vote?
0 ups, 2mo,

I’m saying that you are saying that if 33% of voters are in a certain few areas, you want to make it so it doesn’t count for 33% of the electoral college

The electoral college is proportional with more populous states having more electors. I think you need to read up on the electoral college.

"13th conservative Oregon county approves measure to secede and join Greater Idaho." This is why we have the Electoral College. Our founding fathers were wise enough to see this. Do you want another civil war? All voices must be heard or there will be consequences.

Funny how Dems think that, if we elected presidents via popular vote, they would win more elections. What they fail to consider is that Republican candidates would change their campaign strategy so they’d end up winning the popular vote - probably more often than Democrats.

Truth is, if it is a popular that we lose, we will accept that as the will of the people
4 ups, 2mo,

It's not really the meaning of the phrase "will of the people" that you may think. In the 2020 election, 5 counties across the entire United States decided the critical outcome for the election.
3 ups, 2mo,

Because they are the most populated areas

it is the reason why the electoral college is the exact number of U.S. representatives and senators from each state, so the electors are balanced by population. The Democrats and their supporters are proposing to remove the electoral college, which means to remove the election.
2 ups, 2mo,

That makes no sense. You know it. Just because every state gets a certain amount of representatives doesn’t mean it’s fair. They are disproportionate to the amount of people
1 up, 2mo
No, they are exactly proportionate to the amount of people. The number of U.S. representatives that each state gets, as well as matching number of electors, is directly based on the population, which is why we have a census taken every 10 years to adjust the representatives and electors.

A big concern particularly from California & New York is that they've lost House seats, as well as electors, due to their shrinking population mostly from residents moving to other states.

Only the will of the people who live in the biggest cities.
2 ups, 2mo,

Well the big cities make up about half the voters in 2020
2 ups, 2mo,

Yup, that’s why they created the electoral college. So candidates need to pay attention to people in smaller communities too.

That’s why we elect members based on counties. Do you think that each state has no variety? That Cali is all desert (or all forest, depending on if you think of NorCal or SoCal) or that there is no variety or diversity within states? Your point makes a huge generalization
0 ups, 2mo
My point is why there is an electoral college. I didn’t make it up. If you have a problem with it, argue it with your representatives. Good luck with that. 😂
3 ups, 2mo
So you are for absolute majority rule? So if the white majority voted to keep blacks slaves you’re ok with that. Or if the majority of the population voted to ban gay marriage. You’re all about the will of the people right?

1/5 of the population of the United States of America would be able to determine who gets elected? Mind you, age wasn't accounted for in the numbers I posted, but the entire states' populations were, not just those their big cities. In both California and New York, a huge chunk of the population live in more rural areas, and those tend to vote more Republican.

New York and California aren't the exceptions, they ARE America, in terms of representing the various demographics.

The tumbleweed states that the Electoral College grants a disproportionate amount of their votes to are not just a tad more monochromatic, but their populations are aging as well, and both these are on the increase as their youth move out to other more economically sound states. So basically an aging less educated poorer 'White' population is having an ever-increasing sway in politics. Not just with presidential elections - the only place in the world that has such a voting system, btw - but with the Senate as well.

Come back when democrats want proper voter ID laws like the rest of the world does...
0 ups, 2mo
Nope, that's the Republicans who are against voter ID with photo issued automatically when each citizen reaches voting age, which is done in every single country in the world that has voting except the USA.

No, you’d still have elections, they would be decided by a few large cities.

what if I told you there is a f***ton of other democratic systems that don't have electoral college?
Though I understand why you would prefer one that doesn't overly favor densely populated cities over rural areas. there is no perfect system, really, it all comes down to what the people in charge of the voting system thought was more important.
3 ups, 2mo,

Nope. Even in national races like the senate they are contained within a state. That’s what the electoral college does for the presidency: makes it to be 50 state races that decide one office.
2 ups, 2mo
I was thinking systems outside of the usa. like pretty much all of Europe or some countries in Africa and Asia (though some of those are debatable in regards to just how democratic they actually are)
4 ups, 2mo
Minority voters become minimized. Blacks12%, Hispanic 18%.whites 65%. Sounds like the fastest way to unite whites and return to repressed minorities.
6 ups, 2mo
"Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner." - Benjamin Franklin

This is why we aren't one, and why we have the electoral college system.

If Califoregon, Illisota and New Yorkachusetts want to be the all powerful deciders of everything, they can go form their own country and run it (into the ground) any way they want. Until such time as they choose do that, they're stuck in a democratically elected Representative Republic called the United States of America.

lol ....it would tell me that you are very uneducated as to the purpose of an "Electoral college".
example:
In the United States, the Electoral College is the group of presidential electors that is formed every four years during the presidential election for the sole purpose of voting for the president and vice president. The process is described in Article II of the U.S. Constitution.[1] The number of electoral votes a state has equals its number of Senators (2) plus its number of Representatives in the House of Representatives, the latter being dependent on the Census's reported population. Each state appoints electors using legal procedures determined by its legislature, equal in number to its congressional delegation (representatives and 2 senators) totaling 535 electors in the 50 states. The Twenty-third Amendment from 1961 granted the federal District of Columbia three electors, bringing the total number of electors to 538. Federal office holders, including senators and representatives, cannot be electors. Of the current 538 electors, a simple majority of 270 or more electoral votes is required to elect the president and vice president. If no candidate achieves a majority there, a contingent election is held by the House of Representatives to elect the president and by the Senate to elect the vice president.

Ancient Greece tried pure democracy, or direct Democracy, like Democrats want, it didn't go well at all. Kind of ironic when you think about it, because Ancient Greece gave us all the major philosophers that are studied in philosophy classes till this day. The Greeks were really brilliant in one way, but really stupid in others. & In spite of their intellectual brilliance as a culture, they were also immoral as hell.

Exactly right. Even Athens, the “cradle of democracy” came to be ruled by dictators after only a short time.
