Here’s some history for you. Curious why black people nowadays vote mostly Democrat? The answer lies in LBJ’s presidency. LBJ was a known racist who used racial slurs often. The reason he passed the civil rights acts was to gain the black vote. Everybody knew he hated black people though, so he also instituted welfare programs which have been disastrous to the black community. Prior to that time, the crime rates, unemployment rates, and poverty rates were all decreasing and income was increasing in the black community. That is impressive progress especially when you consider that it happened during Jim Crow era. From LBJ’s presidency and on the trends reversed. The black community then began to see increased crime and poverty rates due to Democrat policies, yet still would vote Democrat because why would you ever not vote for the person giving you a check? Now here’s the kicker: Only 4 years of Trump in office who focused on undoing those welfare programs and black income reached its highest ever and unemployment reached a record low as well. Answer me this: If Trump and the Republicans are the true racists and are trying to keep black people down, why are their policies the most beneficial and why did Trump see an increase in minority votes during his re-election campaign?
1 up, 3y,

I've heard this argument before about welfare and I disagree. The socio-economic disparities experienced by black communities came about because of discrimination, not welfare. That's a fact. Democrats saw that it was impossible to get the entire country on board with equality and that, even though slavery was abolished so many decades ago, blacks were still being treated like second-class citizens and weren't being hired for jobs, weren't being allowed to move into the nicer neighborhoods, weren't being accepted into the better schools, etc.

If there's a blizzard and someone's asking to be let in, you don't get to close the door in their face then blame them for freezing to death. Democrats put programs in place to help bridge those gaps that people were facing. Yes, there are those who just take advantage. There will always be those. But they don't make up the entire scope of people being helped by welfare. There's also the elderly, the disabled, the infirm, veterans with PTSD who can't work, etc.

Trump didn't DO anything that made any huge difference. The largest drop in unemployment happened under Obama and continued under Trump so he tried to take credit. It was at its lowest point under Trump, that much is true. But the largest drop happened under Obama. No one is trying to keep blacks down. That's a white supremacist fallacy aimed at fighting equality.
[deleted]
3 ups, 3y
The disparities came about by discrimination you say? Then how could it be that black Americans were progressing while Jim Crow laws were in place yet their progress reversed after the civil rights acts? Actual research shows that fatherless children are 3x more likely to be involved in crime, more likely to be poor, and more likely to fail school. Democrat Lyndon B Johnson, who voted against every civil rights act prior to being president, knew this. So the welfare plan he made gave checks to mothers and extra per every child she had but only if there was no father present in the household. So it incentivized single motherhood, unemployment, and baby daddies. Thus, the downward spiral afterward is explained. LBJ himself summed up the plan when he said "We'll have these n*ggers voting Democratic for 100 years."

Remember when Obama greatly increased welfare and then the number of people on welfare increased by 400%? It's true not everybody accepting welfare is a lazy bum exploiting the system, but the overwhelming majority are. I still remember back in the day when Bill Clinton showed Democrats believed in what's actually good for the economy and he cut welfare for that reason. Nowadays the Democrats have done a complete flip on position.

Pre recession the unemployment rate was at 4.4%. Obama took office January 2009 at 7.8%. It continued to rise and peaked at 10% after 9 months of Obama as president. After 2 terms of Obama the lowest it got was 4.8%. That's 8 years and still not a complete recovery. Sure, he was still on pace to hit even but very slowly. And if you look at the peak until when he left office he decreased the unemployment by 52% over the course of 8 years. Now let's compare that to Trump's recovery from 2020 unemployment caused by the covid lockdowns (which Trump opposed). At it's peak the unemployment rate was at 14.8%. Trump decreased that by 58% in 8 months. Not 8 years, 8 MONTHS. That's a better recovery percentage, from a worse starting point, in 1/12 the amount of time. Of course now Biden will take credit for that recovery.

Curious why Democrats still push for welfare? Because they have to keep people on the government teat. When they don't, black people work hard and better themselves and begin voting Republican. So the Democrats keep the cycle going, their power depends on it. It has nothing to do with morality.

Have you ever been ti the Pullman neighborhood in south Chicago? Beautiful homes built by and occupied by lovely black families. I have spoken to the widows of Pulman employees, some of the nicest kindest people I've ever met.

Now most of it is run down and inhabited by non producers and gangs.

I suppose it is the fault of the airline industry that destroyed it and not 60 years of Democrat leadership. The last word should have a t at the end.

I have this theory - Harlem before the Great Depression was a thriving area for Blacks. Then the Great Depression hit. . .and Harlem didn't recover. Considering the type of person FDR ended up being(camps for Japanese Americans after Pearl Harbor).
1 up, 3y
Sorry, I do not follow your theory.

Harlem is inner city, and inner city will always fail. Prior to the depression blacks fled the poor south for good paying jobs in the north.

At the start of thee war blacks were relegated to menial and dangerous jobs because of Democrat Jim Crow segregation. The military (all branches) were full of southerners that would not put up with integration.

There are a lot of contributing factors to why black communities fail, but one of the most prevalent IMHO is that inner cities are kind of like a Ponzi or pyramid scheme. The lower levels prop up the higher ones, but there is never enough good jobs to go around.

Now if you don't want to take a low paying job you can get GVT assistance. I know a person that quit their environmental services job at the hospital, $10.50 hr. and has been on unemployment since COVID and is making half again as much for sitting at home.

Right, Lincoln and the Union States pushed for freed slaves and the Southern Democrats - knowing they lost the Civil War - fired up the Klan. The Klan focused on putting endorsed democrat politicians in office while attacking both black and white republicans.

I think we should ask Biden, since he was such great friends with his mentor Robert Byrd.

So, because the KKK re-aligned their political view - all republicans did also? I'm trying to find the logic here. Who cares who they support - they don't speak for an entire political party.

The left is supported by filthy communists. I don't believe their moronic political beliefs reflect the full democratic political spectrum.

Speaking of "Today's" KKK, can I get a member list please? So I can contact them of course. And if you say David Duke - don't make me laugh. The man was a life-long democrat and "switched" his politics after he realized he would never win an election - as democrats primarily held the black vote since FDRs social welfare programs. If you can find blacks that will vote in KKK members - then prove me wrong here. I'd love to hear your theory on why D.D. changed parties.

Of course the KKK had to "switch parties" you dunce. Politically, they would NEVER get someone in office with a (D) next to their name. As I said above, FDR bought the black vote with welfare programs.

Okay scratch the racist democrats from the past - let’s focus on the new ones.

- Democrats blatantly ignore low-income blacks in major blue cities leaving them to suffer in crime-ridden areas.
- Democrats fight to keep blacks on social welfare programs so they have a more difficult time leaving said crime-ridden areas
- Democrats deny blacks school choice so their children have to remain in underfunded trash schools
- Democrats push to destroy the nuclear family with financial incentives for single mothers
- Democrats openly call a black man a slur because he has different political opinions
- Democrats use minorities as a voting wedge for every election

None of that is from “100 years ago”. Additionally, FDRs plan to “.. have those n***ers voting democratic for 200 years” is beginning to wear off, democrats are pushing to get as many illegal aliens in the country before the 2022 election. Soon, the Democratic Party will completely abandon blacks altogether as they will no longer be needed to win elections.

Lastly, as far as Obama is concerned- the “first black president” did less for the black community in 8 years than Donald Trump did in 4. All Obama did was push more social welfare programs onto them. Disgusting to think I voted for that puke.

How is democrats ignoring low-income blacks an opinion? Look at blue states - and more specifically - large blue cities. Chicago, New York, Baltimore, Seattle, Portland. There is the fact.

And you need a source for democrats keeping blacks on welfare programs? Really? May I point you to any American history book for that.

Also, democrats offer school choice?

https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/biden-should-back-school-choice-democratic-voters-want-it-his-ncna1092121

And no, if the democrats ever lost the minority vote - they would never win another election. Hence why Biden went on a radio show to say if you can’t decide between him or Trump, then you ain’t black. Or even more cringy, go out in front of Hispanics and play Despacio.

Notice how republicans don’t do shit like that often? It’s because they are busy actually trying to educate their voter base on needed changes in their communities.

And just because Obama “broke the color barrier” didn’t make him a good president for the minorities. So yes, it didn’t really matter to me since I don’t vote on race. I just find it comical that Trump (a supposed racist) did more for blacks than Obama - a supposed black man.
1 up, 3y
Who says they're being ignored? Red states and Republican run cities have plenty of low-income black neighborhoods. Are Republicans ignoring them, too? Show me where Republicans are doing anything for black communities. Show me where they've turned anything around at all.

I can tell you that the mayor of Compton has been stopped by LA sheriffs and had her whole family made to stand out with their hands on their hood for no probable cause of anything except being black. Leaders of low-income black neighborhoods have an uphill battle between their budget, the amount of property tax they're bringing in, trying to get funding from the federal government, battling Republican county supervisors, state bureaucracy, etc. Ask Mitch McConnell why Kentucky ranks so low in everything across the board.

Not to shock you or put historical perspective on it.. but mine was a direct quote from Lyndon B. Johnson’s mouth - and the other is a poorly paraphrased quote from the same man (quote below). He was a democratic president by the way. So no, not the “.. second Republican” to post the N word. Just like when Biden used the N word in Congress, he was quoting some one, right? History is not your friend.. you have a lot of learning to do.

Admit how?? You can't even admit systemic racism exits. You continue to try to blame slavery on Democrats when slavery was in effect for 170 years before the country was even founded. Everyone owned slaves back in the day and everyone was suppressing and oppressing freed slaves for decades after slavery was abolished. Do you admit to that? Do you admit to the Republican ideology shift in the 60's which aligned your party with the KKK and eventually neo-nazis? Do you admit to the current heavy white supremacist presence in your party amongst southern states and Trump and his cabinet? While you're admitting mistakes and all...
4 ups, 3y,
2 replies
That’s because systemic racism doesn’t exist. Racism, however does exist - and it exists on both sides of the aisle. As of now, democrats make it far more apparent. They attack a group like KKK for hating minorities while promoting BLM which hates whites.

Democrats are not guilty of creating slavery. No one with a sound mind believes that slavery began with this country. Slavery still exists all over the world today. However with that being said, democrats pushed real hard to retain policy that allowed for slavery in the south. And that is undeniable truth.

And I believe it was the Neo-Nazis and KKK that aligned with the party, not the party aligning with them. There is a difference. KKK has always been a political paramilitary for the democrats. Since they cannot openly win an election with a (D) next to their name - they are using the Republican platform. All true conservatives and republicans dismiss their ideology and it does not represent the party as a whole - just as ANTIFA doesn’t represent the democrats, right?

Trump has openly disavowed white supremacy and neo-Nazis more times than I have been alive. If you would clean out your ears or change the channel from CNN you would know this. I’d wager that Trump has done more for the black community than the last 5 democratic presidents combined. Pathetic, racist, and treasonous democrats have been using blacks for too long - I’m glad some are starting to wake up and see the evil that is the Democratic Party.

Democrats didn’t give us the 1st black president, the media did that. Just like the media got Trump elected . . . by mentioning him in literally every news broadcast for nearly two years straight before the election.

Still doesn’t mean the media didn’t influence the vote. Or do only Russians do that?

Just stating facts, not arguing one way or the other. The media does influence, that's why Cambridge Analytica happened and why Facebook and Twitter had to go through so much trouble to remove disinformation from their platforms. Russians just hack elections.

My article might have bias but the facts are the facts. Republicans joined forces with the KKK during the civil rights movement. You two have been cozy for over 50 years now. And coincidentally, the KKK tried to claim to be a Christian, patriotic organization back in the day. Sound familiar??

Your comment speaks volumes, OM...volumes.
You say the Democrats "gave us the first black president this country has ever had"... as if the Democrats owned Obama, you know, like a slave, property.
And you keep referring to them as "minorities", a term that keeps them on the Democrat plantation as slaves that the Democrats can use as tools to harvest the Democrats new form of "cotton", known as VOTES.
It appears as if the Democrats only want Blacks in Government who are their Blacks. If given the chance ( and they prove it over and over again...look at how they treat Justice Clarence Thomas, Herman Cain, Candace Owens, Condoleeza Rice, Dr. Ben Carson, Colonel Alan West, Alveda King, and host of others too long to list here) they would only allow "their" Blacks into Government. I guess they only want their reliable "House *******" in their "White" mansions. The rest get to stay in the fields and provide their White masters with "cotton" (votes).

False. Leftist academics, likely the same one pushing for slavery reparations, made that up. The reason is because to justify reparations over 150 years later they argue that white people today still bear guilt of ancestor’s crimes. Of course this logic could just as easily be used against them since the Democrats were the slaveholders back then. So they fabricated the party switch story.

Facts: Republican presidents had been aiming to make gains in the south as early as 1928 when Herbert Hoover won 47% of the southern popular vote. In 1956 Dwight Eisenhower won 7 Southern states even after supporting the supreme court decision to desegregate public schools and sending troops to enforce integration at little rock high school.
Also Nixon won less southern states than Eisenhower in 1968, whereas 8 years later Jimmy Carter won a southern landslide with Virginia as the only state that voted Republican.
Republicans didn’t begin winning the south consistently until the 1990’s. Google the 1992 election. Republicans didn’t hold a majority on southern congressional seats until 1994. In fact, Republicans didn’t solidify their hold on the south at the local, state, and national level until the 2000s.

If there was no party switch, then what's with all the tiki torch carrying meatheads walking around Charlottesville and running protesters over in their Dodge Charger? Why do people in YOUR party fly confederate flags?
[deleted]
1 up, 3y
The same reason why people in YOUR party fly communist flags even though communists have historically been among the worst mass murderers and torturous psychopaths. And those very communists voted for Biden so I guess Biden and every Democrat is a communist too right? (No of course not, and those who believe so are idiots.)

Another thing worth noting is that the Republicans have never been the party promoting anti whiteness that you see from Democrats today. Neither the Democrats nor Republicans today are the party of white supremacy, but since the Democrats are taking on anti white hate of course KKK aligns with the only other party. Even still, remember 2016 when David Duke endorsed Trump and Trump disavowed it right away? In fact the media asked him about it many many times hoping to get a different answer but he stood firm that he rejected the support. The first state to make Juneteenth a holiday was Texas and last year Trump made it a national holiday, Trump made a platinum plan for black America that helped achieve the highest black and latino income ever, he pledged 500 Billion dollars to help lift the black community, and Trump even officially labeled the KKK as domestic terrorists, hardly the work of white supremacists.
As for Charlottesville which you brought up, Trump condemned that too: "Racism is evil. And those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs. Including the KKK, neo Nazis, white supremacists, and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear."
During Trump's 2016 campaign there was a KKK newspaper that spoke somewhat approvingly of Trump and leftists thought that was checkmate to prove he's tied with KKK until the Trump campaign rejected the praise, called it repulsive, and the writer of the article clarified that it's not a formal endorsement and he still disagrees with Trump on various issues. According to the KKK writer, he likes that Republicans have nationalism, (whereas Democrats are pushing anti American messages.)
The last major "ah ha!" moment was when there was an image of KKK members holding a Trump Pence flag, but it turned out to be photoshopped.

Because Liberalism means 'something new.' and Conservatism mean 'protecting tradition'. Those who supported the the tradition of slavery were conservative and those who wanted something new(freeing the slaves) were liberal. The thing about Liberal and Conservative is what is believed is not set in stone. In the present Conservatives want to protect the Constitution and Liberals want to change it or get rid of things like the 2nd Amendment. What is believed at a given point is not always a good thing either. I'm a US Conservative however I will never agree with a North Korean Conservative and a pre-Civil War Conservative is clearly a NO from me.

Then it’s not a switch.

Also, you said it happened with Nixon’s campaign, vox says it happened when the civil rights acts were passed which turned off the southerners to Democrats and, according to vox, “immediately” they began voting Republican. Both those answers are wrong. If either of those two times were when they decided to stop voting Democrat then why did they wait almost 30 years to do so? The actual answer is that southerners changing vote was primarily for religious reasons, not racial reasons. Remember, even today religion plays a big role in political views. Still, there was no abrupt switch. For decades the south had been slowly becoming more republican and it sped up after Roe vs Wade. To this day southerners are very christian so of course when the Democrats started becoming increasingly anti christian the voters turned to Republicans. Just 10 years earlier JFK ,who was mainstream Democrat, vehemently opposed abortion. Now that the Democrat party had abandoned themselves the voters turned to Republicans. Another little known fact is that for a long time Protestant Christians in the south wouldn’t vote at all but after roe v wade they began to since abortions goes against their faith.
The next event that again sped up the process of the south going red was Reagan’s presidency but once again leftists don’t bring this up just like they don’t bring up Eisenhower in the switch debate because it challenges their claim that Republicans are the racists of the past. Reagan was extremely popular including in the south even after giving reparations to Japanese Americans who suffered internment camps in WW2 because of FDR. Reagan also gave official honor to the Navajo code talkers for their service.

One more thing: Since the split in party between the liberals and conservatives, (federalists and anti federalists) the original issue of disagreement has always been that the conservatives wanted small government and the liberals wanted a big government. That division remains the same today. Republicans still want less government and Democrats still want more. Until that flips there was no switch.
[deleted]
0 ups, 3y
No you never mentioned Vox but I brought them up anyway since the claims in their video is the 2nd most popular theory within the switch myth. There's some food for thought: If even among those who believe switch there isn't agreement as to when it happened, shouldn't that be further proof it didn't happen at all?

True not every Christian is a conservative but the vast majority are because many fundamental conservative values are based on Christianity, such as stance on abortion, capitalism, family structure, sexual morality and so on.
Still, you're looking at it the wrong way. I said that in the past most Protestants wouldn't vote because of what Jesus spoke in John 17:14-16. Nowadays a lot more of them do vote though.
Also how blind do you have to be to think that Democrats today aren't becoming anti Christian?

"I don't hear people actually claim this."
I do, most likely they created the switch theory to justify this claim.

"Something which likely had no effect at all on Southerners' votes"
I like how you specifically chose to respond to the easier fact to make a rebuttal to because it's hard to keep up your claim after knowing that so many southerners supported Reagan, who gave reparations to Japanese Americans who were forcefully relocated to internment camps and their property was seized as contraband all courtesy of Democrat FDR.
