The tactic where LEFTY continuously shifts the goalposts or redefines terms to evade being proven wrong—much like how Harry Houdini escaped from seemingly impossible situations. Lefty can’t prevail, in debate, by using Facts —the Facts are Against Lefty. Thus, Lefty will be; • Changing definitions mid-argument. • Demanding impossible standards of proof from opponents. • Dismissing contradictory evidence as part of a conspiracy. • Moving from one argument to another when challenged. This tactic makes meaningful debate impossible—which is Lefty’s Goal. It’s similar to Motivated Reasoning, where Lefty selectively interprets data to fit their beliefs. TYPES of Motivated Reasoning 1. Confirmation Bias – Seeking out or interpreting evidence that supports what one already believes while ignoring contradictory data. 2. Disconfirmation Bias – Scrutinizing opposing evidence more harshly than evidence that aligns with one’s views. 3. Identity-Protective Cognition – Rejecting facts that threaten one’s social, political, or ideological identity. 4. The BACKFIRE Effect – When confronted with contradictory evidence, LEFTY MUST DOUBLE DOWN on their beliefs instead of reconsidering; Breaking out of Motivated Reasoning requires INTELLECTUAL INTEGRITY, CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS, HUMILITY, & EXPOSURE to DIVERSE VIEWPOINTS.
