It doesn't "let them", it simply decriminalized something that never should have been made criminal to begin with. The press acts as if those supporting the change are encouraging the act of 'misgendering' people.
It matters greatly to real Americans who love their country. It is the basis of our freedoms. Criticism or mockery doesn’t negate free speech. Being in opposition to an argument doesn’t attack free speech it is the excerise of it.
Or if they were born a girl and they identify as a boy yet you call them a girl even though they look like a girl and sound like a girl then that's misgendering too.
