How a black man became the first American slave owner

In 1621 a black man by the name of Anthony Johnson arrived from Africa to Virginia to be an indentured servant, not a slave. He was captured by Arab traders in his native Angola and sold as a slave. By 1635 he had completed his service contract, and by the late 1640’s he had acquired 250 acres of land. As a land owner he started using indentured servants himself, acquiring five. In 1654 one of his servants, a black man by the name of John Casor was due for release from his service. Johnson decided to extend his service and Casor left to work for Robert Parker who was a free white man. That year Johnson sued Parker in Northampton Court, and in 1655 the court ruled that Johnson could hold Cason indefinitely. The court gave sanction for blacks to hold slaves of their own race. This made Anthony Johnson the first American slave owner and John Cason the first slave in the American colonies. It was another 15 years before the colonial assembly granted free whites, blacks and Indians permission to own black slaves.

What? Soy has nothing to do with it. I eat soy from time to time, and it has zero affect on my political views.

I wouldn't say it tastes good, but it doesn't taste bad. It's flavor is all about seasoning, and I admittedly still prefer meat, but tofu is so much cheaper. Also, if you're a lazy cook (like I am) you don't have to worry about under cooking it. It's already safe to eat.

So why tf are we talking about soy. Soy and tofu are not that great tho. Also for guys, soy contains small amounts of estrogen, so idk about you but that doesn’t sound so great.
0 ups, 4y
1. We're talking about soy because we went off on a tangent
2. The estrogen effect is miniscule. Several cultures have incorporated soy as a major component of their diet for centuries without adverse affects.

Muslims of today owe you no apology for 9/11.

And there's more, but I don't have time to list them all.

No one should be apologizing and kissing anyone's boot over things they had nothing to do with. This is just woke liberals trying to tell people they're better than everyone else without doing anything about it and voting perpetuators of it back into office.

I agree, us white people don't have to be all kissing people's boots or anything like that for racism, but we can't just deny it and act like it never happened.
[deleted]
3 ups, 4y
Exactly...and we shouldn't use it as a platform for unrelated political causes as well.
0 ups, 4y
ya man we can't deny the Civil War happened. HBOMax removed Gone With The Wind from there because its "racist". In fact, the first black woman won the Oscar for that movie. True, Confederates were racist, but that doesn't mean remove EVERYTHING that has to do with them. History is bound to repeat itself if you do not learn from it. History is not there for you to like or dislike it, it is there for you to learn.

There are measures to control the population that do not imply violating human rights.

"Not all humans, unless you oppose all war and capital punishment"

I oppose the death penalty.

"A human that doesn't exist doesn't have human rights"

As Winston said to O'Brien in the book 1984: "I think I exist. I was born and I shall die. I have arms and legs. I occupy a particular point in space. No other solid object can occupy the same point simultaneously."

"Birth control doesn't violate human rights"

Humans have the right to life, do they not?

"Even though the Bible supports it?"

The New Covenant does not support murder.

"I don't know, but let's say they do. That doesn't apply to humans who haven't been conceived yet."

So you agree that human life begins at the point of conception?

So you are implying that Jesus supports everything He did not do away with?

When do you think "personhood" begins?

Because it is to kill an innocent human being, who cannot be guilty of any crime, nor can he defend himself.

All birth control methods, no matter how they are practised, are immoral. If they prevent a pregnancy before the point of conception, they are still immoral, but not murder. Any form of birth control used after the point of conception is murder.

I respect your opinion, but I disagree with it. IMO, it is immoral to engage in sex irresponsibly, and that means having sex without considering the potential consequences.

Is abstinence immoral, timing method immoral? Is it your position that sex without the goal of reproduction is immoral? How about period sex? And just what do you base this on?
2 ups, 4y,
1 reply
well first of all period sex isn't effective and sex isn't exactly bad. I'm guessing your definition of Abstinence is never having contact with any genital, but the modern definition is just nothing sexual that could cause pregnancy or pass STIs, so basically no genital to genital, no genital to anus, and no genital to mouth. That definition is better and works too.
