Didn't we already do this? It denies the government the authority to infringe on a well-regulated militia's rights to bear arms.

Yes, we already did with the meme I posted. And I answered your ridiculous notion that only militia men are allowed to bear arms.

Read the amendment. Learn what punctuation means and how sentence structure is used.

That ridiculous notion was the original intention.

The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home.

Yeah, no, not from the original wording.

No, the original wording explains why the government is forbidden on infringing the right of the people to keep an bear arms. It'sis grammatically different on why a well regulated militia is a good thing and the right to bear arms.

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

That seems very clear to me, but then again the founding fathers were just in it for themselves, so as long as they got to keep all the money and the power they didn't care.

Maybe not the original wording, but the supreme court has ruled that that is what it meant.

Isn’t what I said the current interpretation?

" A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

For reference, with original punctuation and capitalization.

There seems to be a lot of confusion here. The last I knew of this, the 2nd amendment was all about the right of citizens to protect themselves from a tyrannical form of government and that was how it was interpreted. I'm with the, "well-regulated militia" direction more than self defense. Haven't heard that interpretation anywhere.

For informational purposes only, not trying to argue (feels like I've used up my quota for the year): see District of Columbia vs. Heller. SCOTUS ruled that individuals have a right to possess unconnected with a militia.

Unfortunately, it does violate the 2nd amendment. "Shall not be INFRINGED" isn't something I take lightly. Apparently, you and those like you, do.

No, not just militia. Reread the amendment, then learn how punctuation changes meaning in sentence structure. Then maybe you'll understand what is being said in the amendment.
0 ups, 4y
Educate yourself. Might I suggest starting with the Federalist Papers? There plenty of notes and writings directly from the Founding Fathers concerning the wording of the 2A and it's exact meaning. It's been "hidden" and suppressed from common knowledge by those that want to infringe on it. There was much debate and it was revised many times by them till it was distilled down to what we have now. Even the punctuation was hotly contested! It was never meant to only apply to militias, even the word "regulated" meant something different that your understanding of the word today.

George Carlin was a smart guy, but he was also just a comedian. He was partially correct on this, but failed to realize the Constitution was a document that protected our God given rights and now man is trying to take them away.

The Constitution Has NOTHING To Do With Religion Other Than Giving Freedom To Worship And No Religion Can Be Considered The Religion Of The USA And No Religious Tests Can Be Given To Serve In The Government!!! So Stick That GOD Crap Up Yours!!!

It's Not A Right If It Can Be Taken Away!!! George Is Correct, You Agreed He Was Correct Then You Are Claiming The Opposite!!!

Two things.

1) You obviously have some kind of hatred for someone you believe doesn't exist. Illogical.

2) You've obviously never read any of the founding fathers speeches and quotes. If you have, you'd realize their principals were based on Christian values.

Lose your attitude or don't bother replying to my comments.

He's right. There are no, "God" given rights. Paul Revere was a Universalist. The founding fathers believed in all sorts of different things. The rights Americans have were given through the thoughts of smart men concocting what they thought would be an ideal form of a new type of government. That idea was then forged through the blood of thousands to make it happen.

If they were God given, God would give them to more than just 5% of the worlds population.

99.99% of the founding fathers were Christians. They believed in God. They also recognized that religious conflicts caused a lot of wars. If you are a Christian, then yes, your rights are given by God. If you are an athiest, then constitutionally your rights are given by nature. Everybody in the world, by the fact they exist has the right to not be killed, to live free, and to keep the product of their labor.

THE WHOLE POINT of the Constitution was that people would be free, which at the time was considered ludicrous by most "learned" men. The US was to be the exception to the near slavery most people lived in. That's American exceptionalism.
1 up, 4y
No, it's not 99.99% Not even close.

1. The smallest group were ex Catholic's and believed in Deism.
2. The mid-group, Christians
3. The largest group, followed Christian practices but were influenced by Deism. They separated themselves from the belief in a supernatural being that interacted with our daily life.

"Freedom of religion isn't anywhere in the Bible."

Actually Is The Opposite The Bible Calls For The Death Of Other Religions And Their Whoshipers!!!

Death to Followers of Other Religions

Whoever sacrifices to any god, except the Lord alone, shall be doomed. (Exodus 22:19 NAB)

Kill Nonbelievers

They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul; and everyone who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, was to be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman. (2 Chronicles 15:12-13 NAB)

Kill False Prophets

If a man still prophesies, his parents, father and mother, shall say to him, “You shall not live, because you have spoken a lie in the name of the Lord.” When he prophesies, his parents, father and mother, shall thrust him through. (Zechariah 13:3 NAB)

Kill the Entire Town if One Person Worships Another God

Suppose you hear in one of the towns the LORD your God is giving you that some worthless rabble among you have led their fellow citizens astray by encouraging them to worship foreign gods. In such cases, you must examine the facts carefully. If you find it is true and can prove that such a detestable act has occurred among you, you must attack that town and completely destroy all its inhabitants, as well as all the livestock. Then you must pile all the plunder in the middle of the street and burn it. Put the entire town to the torch as a burnt offering to the LORD your God. That town must remain a ruin forever; it may never be rebuilt. Keep none of the plunder that has been set apart for destruction. Then the LORD will turn from his fierce anger and be merciful to you. He will have compassion on you and make you a great nation, just as he solemnly promised your ancestors. “The LORD your God will be merciful only if you obey him and keep all the commands I am giving you today, doing what is pleasing to him.” (Deuteronomy 13:13-19 NLT)

Kill Followers of Other Religions.

1) If your own full brother, or your son or daughter, or your beloved wife, or you intimate friend, entices you secretly to serve other gods, whom you and your fathers have not known, gods of any other nations, near at hand or far away, from one end of the earth to the other: do not yield to him or listen to him, nor look with pity upon him, to spare or shield him, but kill him. Your hand shall be the first raised to slay him; the rest of the people shall join in with you. You shall stone him to death, because he sought to lead you astray from the Lord, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. And all Israel, hearing of this, shall fear and never do such evil as this in your midst. (Deuteronomy 13:7-12 NAB)

2) Suppose a man or woman among you, in one of your towns that the LORD your God is giving you, has done evil in the sight of the LORD your God and has violated the covenant by serving other gods or by worshiping the sun, the moon, or any of the forces of heaven, which I have strictly forbidden. When you hear about it, investigate the matter thoroughly. If it is true that this detestable thing has been done in Israel, then that man or woman must be taken to the gates of the town and stoned to death. (Deuteronomy 17:2-5 NLT)

"The Constitution of most of our states (and of the United States) assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed."
- Thomas Jefferson, letter to to John Cartwright, 5 June 1824

"I ask who are the militia? They consist now of the whole people, except a few public officers."
- George Mason, Address to the Virginia Ratifying Convention, June 4, 1788

"On every occasion [of Constitutional interpretation] let us carry ourselves back to the time when the Constitution was adopted, recollect the spirit manifested in the debates, and instead of trying [to force] what meaning may be squeezed out of the text, or invented against it, [instead let us] conform to the probable one in which it was passed."
- Thomas Jefferson, letter to William Johnson, 12 June 1823

And that's all anyone needs to know.

In the context of the constitution, a militia means the sum of all the citizens of a country. The 2nd amendment was written to solve 3 problems:
1) How does a new country protect itself from foreign invaders with standing professional armies?
2) How can you protect the citizens from their own government.
3) How can you protect the citizens from each other esp. without an organized police force.
