okay explain what do you mean by basic means? Water, air, food and a roof. Why should the government provide for those? Your parents provide you that until you reach an age that you are able to work and get it for yourself. The problem is that now people do not think they have to get a job so that they provide their own means and instead they want someone else to give it to them. You = commie

Weird isn't that in these kind of countries people are happier, there is less crime and differences between rich and poor are smaller. If that called commu, fine.

Strawman fallacy.

How so, please explain. Be ready to loose another argument.

Saying that someone supporting universal healthcare that won’t bankrupt them is a communist is the straw man fallacy. That is because there is a wide range of systems from healthcare will bankrupt you to communism.

So, I come from Cuba. My family escaped Cuba, which had free health care, free education, so clearly none of those are the answer. I also served the military and I am a disabled veteran, who has free healthcare from the VA. I am going to drop some more wisdom on you. Even thou I have free healthcare I do not use it, instead I use the health care provided by my work. Why you may ask? Because VA care awful, they have very bad doctors who all they know what to do is supply you with pain killers, they take forever to see you and the service is bad. So I rather pay a few bucks and go to a real doctor that gives me the care I need when I need it. I go from what I learned from personal experience. You just can't depend on the government to improve you life condition, you have to get up and do it yourself. You, who lack wisdom and personal experience, continue listening what your media tells you.

Uh? Where did you hot that from anything I said? I did not even mentioned healthcare. Are you high on Drugs?

Michiel said that universal healthcare is good. You said that he was welcome to live in Cuba. That is the straw man fallacy since you aren't refuting his actual point. Instead you are saying communism is bad when he never said it was good.

I've been conservative for some time, then I'll switch over to what I call the Shrektacular party, am amalgamation of beliefs. I've never been liberal, for some reason

I've actually been known to do that because I enjoy playing devil's advocate. I can actually argue both sides of the abortion debate rather well.

There are plenty of non-government charities: Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, and churches.

401k and Social Security are fine, because the money is the result of your work. It's not a free handout.

Or to the charities who give to the destitute. Inb4 someone pops in with that technicality.

Every system gets abused which is where the rules and regulations come in. To dismiss public assistance outright is just narrow-minded and selfish. I bet a lot of people who share it would change their tune real quick if they were in the shoes of those requiring government assistance to stay alive or get medical care.

Care needs to come naturally, not forced. The problem is when you force people do do something they back away.

I do not want to see destitute families living in the streets. The government lending a temporary helping hand is one thing, people abusing it and making it a way of life is another. Before the Johnson Administration started the welfare program neighborhoods, cities, church groups and families gave members a helping hand. "Hey, your house burned down. Me and ten of your neighbors are here to help you rebuild." "We heard about your kid having cancer. We took up a collection because you missed work and have to stay home." That kind of solidarity is truly appreciated and speaks volumes about the individuals taking up those causes.

And as I said earlier in this thread if someone needs the assistance they should get it. Furthermore, being a veteran you deserve it and earned it. Best of luck to you.

Not necassarily, quite the oppossite in fact at times.

I've met some who decry assistance loudly yet secretly recieve it themselves.
One family I know not only were on welfare while the hubby worked off the books, but collecting in two states, no less. I didn't think this possible till I checked into it, and found out that it was possible. This was 13 years ago, so I don't know if it's different now.
Oh, and at least a couple of them collected SSI as well for bogus reasons.

I've known others who play the system yet yap at the poor like it was a slight of hand cover for what they did.

If someone can't afford contraceptives, they can't afford to have a baby, so let's give them the contraceptives rather than have a baby born into poverty or have to deal with the consequences of an abortion.
4 ups, 7y
Or the birth mother can give the baby up for adoption.

Or better yet, forced sterilization. I think that was tries once somewhere, I don't remember how that turned out?

Even under government provided contraception, it is still the individuals choice as to whether or not to use it. But we must remember that the more we demand from government, the more they can demand from us to "control costs".

I was being facetious, naturally. But seriously, where does it end? Free health care? Free contraception, free abortions, free food, shelter, education, transportation, cell phones, internet access,...?

Love the meme reply, that brings up another alternative that you hardly ever hear about in this debate. It's either "give us contraception or we'll just have to get abortions". What about adoptions?

May it is that it cost about $40k to adopt and go through rigorous investigations to be able to adopt in the US. Have you ever wonder why so many in US adopt kids from other countries? It is not their will to adopt, it is the US policies that makes them near impossible to adopt. Educate yourself.
2 ups, 7y
And you have a point. I think the government should provide (not employers or insurers to provide) contraception, but not because it's a "right", because it's a good policy to keep as many irresponsible women as possible from having children.
