This approach can be seen as patronizing and exclusionary, as it fails to capture the diversity within these groups (Merry, 2019). Stereotyping: DEI initiatives may inadvertently reinforce stereotypes by associating specific groups with certain traits or behaviors. For instance, portraying a particular ethnic group as exceptionally athletic or a specific gender as particularly nurturing can be seen as stereotyping and exclusionary (Lauzen & Dozier, 2005). Overemphasis on Identity Politics: DEI in advertising often focuses on visible aspects of identity, such as race, gender, & sexual orientation, while neglecting other aspects, such as class, religion, or disability. This overemphasis can lead to the exclusion of those who don't fit the narrow definitions of diversity promoted in these campaigns (Crenshaw, 1989). Cultural Appropriation: DEI initiatives may appropriate cultural elements from minority groups without understanding or respecting their significance. This can be seen as exploitative and exclusionary, as it fails to acknowledge the original culture's context and history (Bhaba, 1994). Lack of Authenticity: DEI efforts in advertising may lack authenticity, appearing insincere or forced. This can be seen as exclusionary, as it fails to resonate with the targeted communities and may even alienate them (Pittman & Kivlin, 2019).
