I think I got my sense of humor from him

Damn brotha can't be easy, I lost both of my Grandfathers when I was young so I didn't get to know them as an adult. Feel for ya, I'm really not good at knowing what to say during these times but you're a cool cat and I had to at least say something.

Truly! He was in the army in the korean war, so he asked if I would bring him a care package "one of the ones with viagra in it". He made the staff at the home give him one of the fancy whirlpool baths this morning because "I want to go out in style".

I feel you on that one. My grandmother (his wife actually), suffered a brain aneurysm a few years ago and died almost instantly, and I never got to see her.

I kept hoping for that thing that happens in the movies where the old man wakes up and tells reminds them of his love and gives some last piece of timeless advise, but no.

He held on a few days longer than we expected. The military had sent me to TX for a few days, then I had to work out of town, but I saw him yesterday evening which was my first opportunity (kinda late, I was the only one there by then). He was pretty much in a coma but I talked to him for a while. I had hoped that he could talk back but he did not. I sat with him for a while, and when I got up to leave, he squeezed my hand. My dad called this morning and told me that he had finally passed shortly after I left. A week ago when I had seen him and he could still talk, he told me privately that was how he wanted to go.

Sorry to hear about your grandfather man. At least he's at peace about it, ya know? I hope I'll have that attitude when I get to that point.

Dude. I'm really sorry for you. Now, I'm not religious or anything, but I really do hope sometimes that I'm wrong and we'll get to see our loved ones again. I'll never be sure, but I hope he's satisfied and had a good life, being a former veteran and all.

Regarding your sense of humor, that translates well to your occupation. When things are the darkest and shittiest, if you can laugh and make those around you laugh they'll follow you to hell and back!

They are a special breed, that lot. My Dad just turned 81. He's a Marine Veteran of Korea and Viet Nam. He's the same way. His sense of humor has always gotten the family through our toughest times.
