Massacres and Military Campaigns
• California Indian Catastrophe (1846–1873): State-sanctioned militias, federal troops, and vigilantes launched hundreds of attacks and massacres against California's Indigenous population, dropping their numbers from roughly 150,000 to around 30,000 through state-funded campaigns.
• Sand Creek Massacre (1864): U.S. volunteer cavalry attacked a peaceful village of Cheyenne and Arapaho people in Colorado, killing roughly 160 men, women, and children.
• Wounded Knee Massacre (1890): The U.S. 7th Cavalry surrounded and opened fire on a Lakota encampment at Wounded Knee Creek in South Dakota, killing an estimated 150 to 200 men, women, and children.
Forced Removal and Dislocation
Indian Removal Act and the Trail of Tears (1830–1840): Signed by President Andrew Jackson, this act authorized the forced relocation of tens of thousands of Indigenous people (including the Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Seminole) from their ancestral homelands in the American Southeast to designated Indian Territory in present-day Oklahoma, resulting in thousands of deaths from exposure, disease, and starvation.
• The Long Walk of the Navajo (1864): The U.S. military forced thousands of Navajo (Diné) and Mescalero Apache people to walk hundreds of miles to the Bosque Redondo reservation in Fort Sumner, New Mexico, under brutal conditions.
Cultural Genocide and Assimilation
• Federal Boarding Schools (Late 19th to 20th Centuries): Hundreds of government-run and church-run boarding schools (such as the Carlisle Indian Industrial School) forcibly removed Native American children from their families. Children were punished for speaking their native languages, had their hair cut, and were forced to abandon their cultures under the motto "Kill the Indian, Save the Man".
• Forced Sterilizations (1960s–1970s): In the 20th century, the federal Indian Health Service and outside physicians performed forced or coerced sterilizations on tens of thousands of Native American women, severely impacting the reproductive capacity of Indigenous communities.
