The Ukraine isn't as democratic in its political system as you think it is, it has very indirect electoral democracy even less directly democratic than the USA and the government is more authoritarian than most free 1st world countries that are usually referred to as democracies. Just because Russia is authoritarian doesn't mean the Ukraine is all a free democracy like Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, Canada, etc. These former Soviet countries never fully embraced democracy like the first world.
