'long ago'? Try since before Andrew Jackson became president. As a matter of fact Jackson was the mold for a good chunk of democrats that came after him. Slavery would've gone the way of the pet rock and beta max if he hadn't sold land he stole from Indians to slave owners. That land was prime real estate for cotton. Up until that point cotton was very hard to grow and process.
