Going to do a meme about this rule - "Assume other people are lying when they hand you a gun and say it's unloaded or loaded with blanks."

Rule #1 that I was taught as a child, which is pretty close to this rule #1, is to always check to see if the weapon is loaded when it is handed to you.

Alec Baldwin was clearly negligent. He needs to pay a price for that negligence, imo.

And I have also learned, and readily adopted, that even when someone checks it before handing it to me, I then check it again- once it is in my hands, I am responsible for what happens with it next. Guns are designed to do serious harm to whatever we point them at- you would think people would take that a lot more seriously than they do.

My Uncle is the family member who taught me about gun safety before he ever let me handle a weapon (loaded or not) or shoot one. He taught me that even if you see the person who hands you the weapon check whether it's loaded or not, you STILL check it when it's handed to you.

The obvious gun safety concept there is that a rule like that which is followed without exception, can never be overlooked. Baldwin would likely not have become a murderer had my Uncle been able to school his ignorant ass.

Assume every gun is loaded until YOU check. This is not a blame game. It’s a critical safety issue.

100% spot on, Doc. Even if you see the person check it, then hand it to you, check again. That is what I was taught at a very young age.

I'm glad we got that settled. Now we can let all of the good cops off the hook who had to shoot someone that pointed a toy gun at them.

Perhaps in the mind of a reasonable person, but the general defaming of police has been going on far longer than before George Floyd showed up. Between the liberal media and liberal politicians, I feel confident in stating that many in the police forces around the country would disagree with you.

In my own state, they initially vilified an officer who was called to the scene at a park after people called in, reporting someone flashing a gun wildly around and waving it at people. When the police arrived, this is exactly what was going on. They had no real choice but to shoot, but after the smoke cleared, it turned out to be a 12 year old with a toy gun. National Media did not share your opinion, and they never recanted their reporting.
