--If you want to look at total infections, we're #1.
--If you want to look at total deaths, we're #1.
--If you want to look at active cases, we're #1.
--If you want to look at new cases, we're #3.
--If you want to look at new deaths, we're also #3.
--If you want to look at deaths per million pop (a metric you referenced), we're #10. Not the absolute worst, but many, many other "Western Countries" are doing better.
In no particular order, some countries (western and non-western) with a much better response than the U.S.: South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, New Zealand, Australia, Germany.
Canada is perhaps the most comparable country geographically and culturally to the U.S. Look at the metrics and they've been managing alright: not stellar but not as poorly as us, either.
What we had in America that most other countries did not have was a substantial backlash against any and all restrictions, mask-wearing provisions, etc. in the name of "freedom."
An admirable sentiment in many contexts but totally suicidal in the context of a pandemic.
We have a problem in this country with anything demanding sacrifice (even of a trivial kind, like strapping on a damn piece of cloth) for the public good or requiring us to care for our neighbor.
