The Nordic model is intriguing

The Nordic model is intriguing, but has proven itself only for small countries. So, please explain how it would work, scaled-up, for the US.

(I know I've asked that before, so if you already replied to this in another post, I just haven't seen it yet...)

Notice I did not say socialism. I said “Nordic model”

You brought the s-word into this!

So what do you think? Do you believe them when they say they’re not socialist? Why or why not?

Let’s start easy then.

What is a “socialist policy”?

You used that phrase so I assume you can define it

When you raised this “scale up” question earlier, I said (condensed version):

1. We have all the expertise Denmark has and then some
2. If we can’t do Denmark’s policies for some mysterious reason, why not Canada

I don’t know why I bear the burden of proof on this one. We have a proven model in a country where it works. We can follow it and tweak as necessary

Thanks for the reply. I can't keep up with all the posts as much as I'd like.

I don't know that Denmark is the best example of how to implement the Nordic model, especially their healthcare system. I'd prefer Norway, if I had a vote, with of course all the caveats I've blathered about.

Not Canada, please. Another small country, population-wise.

There's no burden of proof, as far as I'm concerned. I really didn't expect any kind of a detailed reply. I actually expected no reply, or from others some insults. Although with you, I thought a reasonable reply was a distinct possibility.

What I suggest is NOT following it and tweaking as necessary, because I suspect it would go horribly off the rails pretty quickly. At that point, imo, tweaking would be like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Perhaps some sort of very, very, very gradual introduction... but of course you can imagine that the slippery slope argument would be rolled out if that were to happen.

Absolutely correct Elvis. The Nordic Model is definitely based on socialist principles. As they teetered on the brink of economic collapse they moved to a hybrid model and eased the burden on business somewhat in order to be more competitive in the EU, and that only relatively recently. They never went totally "control the means of production", but they did nationalize a lot of business. Norway for example nationalized the oil and gas industry (think of them when you see the price for Brent Crude), so oil and gas revenues have kept that government overspending afloat. As the North Sea has gotten more challenging to produce revenues started dropping and the union piled on with numerous strikes that threatened the national economic harmony.
Ireland slashed taxes, especially corporate taxes to the lowest levels in the world to become more competitive and their economy started screaming faster than they dreamed. Instead of ride the wave, they went right back to what they were doing before and killed their boom.
If our Congress were to take every other session and cut old programs like some states have, they wouldn't be peeling off $4 1/2 trillion from the free market economy every year and things would be a lot different. It's this little taint of socialism in our free trade capitalist system that creates the flaws.
The most simple test and explanation for why socialism has negative inertia can be summed up with the Pilgrims and the explanation by Gov. Bradford (hope I remember the name correctly) who said they nearly starved because the physically capable resented sharing all they grew with the "commune" so they didn't work that hard. When each person was responsible for their own piece of ground there was an immediate abundance that created trade. People who couldn't toil in the fields bartered for shoes, sewing and things they could specialize in. Prosperity flourished. Another more modern example (1834??) was in New Harmony, Indiana- started on pure socialist ideals and failed in the same ways as the Pilgrims. Human nature being what it is, capitalism is the best motivator to live up to human potential, socialism is so contrary to the best of human nature that it exaggerates the worst traits and always fails. Funny how socialist always howl about the greed of business owners but are blind to the greed of their socialist rulers.

Average household income in the US is higher than the average income in Denmark, and our goods are cheaper as well. Then you add their income tax of ~40%.. and basically you're advocating for making less money, giving the government nearly half of that, then spending significantly more for basic goods. And you think this is better, why?

I read much more than Mao's Little Red Book and Marx/Englels Comrade. There is no such thing as a lazy capitalist, that's why they prosper. And of course poor people have so much money that's the easiest place to collect trillions of unearned dollars! You need to research working 100 hours a week.

How many hours a week do you labor against the means of production Comrade? Lazy capitalists have no right to invest in the means of production to deprive you of your right to their money! Trump= LAZY PIG (still your dictator Comrade)

The internet was funded by government money from taxes. Power lines and infrastructure are subsidized by taxes. Corporate farmers were recently “bailed out” by tax money.

"The internet was funded by government money from taxes."

Seriously? Wow... no wonder you wanted to be completely anonymous... that was pretty f**king stupid. Ok, genius - then explain WHY I write a check every month to a PRIVATE company for internet access?

What you are thinking of is what was called DARPAnet. It was a Cold War project that was completely shut down in 1990, but was NEVER used by the general population. Pray thee tell what government-funded communication medium have we been using since 1990?

Then you can explain the existence of multi-billion dollar networking companies like Cisco.

"Power lines and infrastructure are subsidized by taxes."

That would come as news to power companies like ComEd, Duke, and MidAmerican. You are thinking of wind power, which goes utterly bankrupt when the subsidies stop rolling in. This necessarily means they are NOT businesses, just government vote-buying schemes. As such, nobody but the stupid could possibly take them seriously, or use them as an example.

"Corporate farmers were recently “bailed out” by tax money."

Here you have 10% of a point.

We do subsidize farmers to a certain degree because of the unfair advantage other countries give to their farmers. We only subsidize to attempt to level the playing field. However, you can't have it both ways - farmers are either going bankrupt in record numbers, or we are "bailing them out". You can't play both sides of the fence here.

Borden Dairy and Dean Foods.

Don't see a whole lot of government dollars rushing in to "bail" them out. Perhaps if you started getting your information from someone other than another completely f**king stupid liberal, you would learn and know these things.

https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/fossil-fuel-subsidies-must-end/

Fossil Fuel subsidies are stupid after a century. If they can't be viable after that long on their own....they aren't viable. If anything let's subsidize "alternative" energies for 100 years and see what happens to them.
0 ups, 5y,

Again, you don't have enough intelligence to bring to bear any amount of critical thought. If you did, then you would know what your "source" calls a subsidy is also known by another name : tax deduction.

To deny that tax deduction to ONLY the oil companies would invite a lawsuit the government cannot and will not win. Then again, with a minimal level of research and two functioning brain cells this would already be obvious. Only someone sofa king stupid like you would present an OPINION piece as 'evidence'.

Face it, junior - you are just too f**king stupid to be sitting at the big people's table. I already told you what happens to "wind" when the checks stop coming, but here you are advocating for their use, among others. Wind wasn't viable day one, and never will be.

Solar? You are a f**king idiot if you think that's a reality. There are NOT enough 'rare earth' elements to build even 5% of the solar panels we would need to make this a reality. Let's say we can build all the panels we need - what happens when we stop all that energy from striking the planet? Nobody f**king knows because idiots like you are leaping before they look !

Water? Can't do that thanks to the bunny huggers.

Nukes? Ditto.

So what f**king energy source are we going to use?

Unicorn farts?

Leprechaun tears?

You don't know, because you are too totally f**king stupid to have an original thought. You are just a shit-flinging monkey that swings into action when someone else has an incredibly stupid idea and shits it out on the internet. That's all you ever will be based on the stupidity you have shown thus far.

Really?

I brought the pain for EVERY f**king stupid point you raised, and *I* am the dumb one? You couldn't answer the most basic questions I raised, and *I* am the dumb one?

Am I angry? Hell, yes I am angry. I am angry stupid people like you are even given a voice in society, let alone the right to vote. You are so self-assured in your stupidity that you do not let any amount of truth, evidence or reality penetrate your stupidity. That's a completely willful act, because you also self-enforce your stupidity.

Have fun in life? How is that possible when stupid people like you are in the process of f**king up everything in this country. My taxes continually rise because stupid people like you can't do math. My insurance rates rise because dumbasses like you think they need to run to emergency rooms for a headache. Stupidity literally adds a very real cost to nearly EVERYTHING I do in life.

All because you refuse to accept the self-evident fact you are more dumb than the average tree stump.

Or you could strive to be less stupid.

You are a tax on every living, breathing human through your f**king stupidity. Because of you, and everyone in America that is also totally f**king stupid, everything is automatically more expensive than it needs to be. You can't do math, you have no logic skills, you couldn't reason if your life depends on it, you are as incompetent as they come but yet - somehow - you believe your opinions are worth more than a pile of dog shit.

I have absolutely no reason to change. It's people like me that barely manage to hold back the tide of stupidity and destruction stupid people leave in their wake daily. You are so f**king stupid you don't realize if people like me stop countering your stupidity, Darwin takes over and you are dead inside a week. Me change? You had better start praying people like me never change.

As I said - you are in no way smart enough to just shut up while you are behind. Ok... let the bitch-slapping commence.

Your reading comprehension skills are total shit. What part of "completely shut down in 1990" did you not understand? Please explain how something completely shut down and turned off in 1990 is powering the internet of today.

Then you can explain the existence of Cisco, since you skipped right over that. If the government already did all that, why hasn't Cisco dried up and blown away like tumbleweed?

Remember : you wanted to ride this train, so you are going to ride it to the end.

You're an idiot. Hop off the train and throw yourself into a wall.

Just like a liberal - get bitch-slapped around by the truth and facts, throw a tantrum.

YOU WANTED TO RIDE THIS TRAIN, NOT ME.

I warned you - repeatedly - how f**king stupid you were and that you should quit while you are behind. Did YOU take that advice? Hell, no.

The reality is exactly as I have described : someone shits out a brain fart on the internet, and you start flinging that shit around without any thought of your own. You are just not smart enough to participate in society. You are the reason society is declining. I blame the PRIVATELY DEVELOPED INTERNET for convincing stupid people their opinions have worth.

Just do all of society a favor and stop talking until you are no longer sofa king stupid.
