Don't know about Scotty, but the U.S. Fifth Fleet was in the Med, about 1 hour away by jet. Combined Task Force 150 and Combined Task Force 158 were 45 minutes away by helicopter. There was also a team of Special Forces already on a C-130 in Tripoli ready to go.

Don't know if they would have made a difference, but they were never even dispatched, and I believe, they were even told to stand down.

You obviously have no clue about the capabilities of close air support or what an AH-64 Apache is capable of. You also seem ignorant of the fact that helicopters can carry squards of troops as well as heavy ordinance. The C-130 can carry 64 Special Forces troops and was loaded and ready to go.

Besides, when dealing with cowards, the mere presence of support forces probably would have scattered the terrorists.

Actually no, they did not party away, they waited while superiors consulted with lawyers and politicians to see whether or not forces should be inserted and engage.
