This idea, which is rooted in diverse ancient civilizations, religions, and philosophies, has changed over thousands of years and has had an impact on minds like that of Friedrich Nietzsche, who famously made it a central theme in his writings. The notion raises fundamental questions about the nature of time, existence, and human agency, prompting deep contemplation on the meaning of life, suffering, and existence itself.
The notion of eternal return can be seen in the myths and cosmologies of ancient civilizations. The notion of samsara, which is the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth, can be seen as an ancient version of the eternal return in Hinduism. The Hindu faith holds that the universe is always going through cycles of creation, destruction, and regeneration. In a similar vein, ancient Greek ideas, particularly those of the pre-Socratic philosopher Heraclitus, alluded to cyclical time, albeit not always an infinite repetition of the same occurrences.
