The Hopi are from Arizona. | The Hopi know of a Kachina (Spirit) called Kokopelli (wooden backed) who appears as a dragonfly or hunchback man. Images of this figure have been found that are a millennium old. He's portrayed as a dancing, antlered figure. Earlier, less sanitized versions of Kokopelli show him with a long ****, symbol of the male creative force that is today represent by the flute he plays. Kokopelli is a fertility God embodying creative force. He organizes the reproduction of animals, in particular game animals. Kokopelli also symbolizes the end of winter & the coming of spring, hope and new life. His "hunchback" is actually a backpack full of gifts for anyone he encounters. Seeds are common, but he can pull pull anything out of the bag. Some girls are wary of him, as he might try to give them bridal moccasins or even a baby! The magical power of Kokopelli's musical abilities is renowned. With his flute, he can chase away the winter & herald spring, as well as calling on the fruit growing rains. He loves women & often plays romantic or seductive songs. There is a Hopi legend which says that Kokopelli was traveling past a village playing his flute. Growing and gathering wasn't going well, so worried villagers invited him over. He was welcomed with a huge party, the villagers singing & dancing for him all night.
