Payatamu is the butterfly God
of the Zuñi tribe. He became enchanted by the yellow corn maiden, but the possessiveness & lust in his thoughts frightened her delicate family
(white corn, blue corn, etc.) so they
went into hiding under a duck's wings. The Zuñi faced starvation without their primary food source, but the corn maidens were persuaded to return. Payatamu played his flute, the maidens danced,
the corn regrew & everyone feasted.
