Fact:. The head of the DOT federally should have ample experience in transportation.

Fact: Pete got that job handed to him - not by any means of merit or qualifications.

Fact: instead of looking into the matter, which means working with the Ohio DOT representatives to get down to the bottom of what happened...Pete took the time to get in front of the cameras and BLAME Trump.

Fact: it's Pete's job as Secretary to the US DOT to ensure all reporting agencies, their employees, and contractors all follow proper safety regulations. It's Pete's SOLE responsibility to oversee these things. It's hit Job to ensure that all condictors know how to conduct, that all maintenance workers know how to complete routine and preventative maintenance, that all regulators know how to regulate and properly record what is shipping on trains.

Fact: the train was over weight, the maintenance was out of date, and the conductor didn't know how to properly slow down for a sharper turn. These combined items all helped cause the derailment. These items are all Pete's responsibility as Secretary of the Department of Transportation.

So when you ask what the federal government should have or should do... The answer is THEIR JOB.

Small government is less people telling you what food you can eat or stove you or car you can buy. The literal Purpose of the federal government is to defend the borders and coordinate response in disasters.

The federal level isn't doing anything but playing the blame game... That's the problem. They should be getting to the bottom of it.

There are areas of Government that people understand are large & are ok with that. Transportation Department is one of those items.

Investigations take time. There are no instant answers.

The NTSB is currently investigating. They've already found footage from a camera on private property that has led them to identify the exact car wheel & axle that failed.

Because it seems that you're positioning the question as if somehow I don't. That I don't think that the locals are due a great many things, the least of which is free room and board in a safe area until this can be cleaned up.

Because I do think the company should be paying for the families to live somewhere else. They should be paying the family for the time they've lost. For the wages they'll lose because they can't work in the area. I think the company should be paying for generations to make sure the area is cleaned and no lasting impact to the environment and people happen.

I think the business should have been regulated so that it has to maintain a high standard for repair instead of the current deregulated 'wait until it breaks' model we have now.

We're here with this mess because of the regulations being removed and the power of the government to compel things has been reduced. Businesses will always make the same decision- what is the cheaper path regardless of consequences.

The people of East Palestine are in this mess because the government entities charged with oversight are more worried about transgender story hour and hate whitey propaganda. They deferred their incident oversight to the Railroad and allowed them to create a toxic cloud in addition to the groundwater contamination. The same chemical that the government allowed to contaminate drinking water at Camp LeJuene that has resulted in massive lawsuits. The railroad company donates very generously to both parties. That’s why no democrats or republicans are even speaking up for accountability. If this had crashed in a black neighborhood the Biden administration would have already allocated billions of dollars for clean up.

The major difference whistle is that you believe the government is good and should be followed blindly. I don’t. I truly don’t understand how anyone who claims to be a democrat doesn’t support free speech and demands blind obedience to government mandate and control. That’s not a democrat. Warren Buffet does not own the Norfolk Southern Railroad. The largest shareholder of Norfolk Southern is the Vanguard Group. Buffet owns the BNSF. An entirely different railroad company.
