Actually it is. The government has the military, too you know, like in the American Revolution ("the Regulars are coming!"). They've got numerous other ways to exercise control (foreign mercenaries also come to mind, but there are plenty more).

Also, those of us who are right wing are pro police, but not pro tyranny. Though this may go WAAAAAY above your head, someone CAN support local law enforcement WITHOUT supporting tyranny. This is why we have things like the 4th, 5th, and 6th Amendments, to prevent this sort of thing. If there were no enforcement of laws, then there would be anarchy, and though slightly more preferable than tyranny, is by no means an ideal situation. Police are liable to many different laws, and tyranny was to develop, then that's why we have another very important amendment- the 2nd.
