Awesome meme. I agree with you. Although I don't have a farm to grow food. So instead we have created about a years supply of long term food storage items. And because Biden is causing a food shortage, my wife and I are going to buy seeds. I my not have a farm but I have a front and backyard that is doing is just growing a lawn. If it gets as bad as I think it will that lawn will be coming out before next spring and the fruits and vegetable seeds will be going in.

Friend gave me a pack of 100-150 random seeds he had left over.
Planted all of them, turns out they're all just marginal variations of ****ing cucumbers.

So yeah...got a 5th greenhouse specifically for a billion incoming cucumbers !

The problem isn't my farm is getting taxed. The problem is my family farm that my people have worked for over 200 years is only able to make a profit if we do even more work to call it "organic" and charge even more to sell it to stupid hippies because the corporations that own our politicians have then write in clauses to pay larger farms subsidies. That's right the government gives big guys money on top of their profits just for already growing more corn than I can. The 2nd problem is despite companies telling you they support local farmers they want as few contacts as possible. If you can't provide x number of tons they won't even take your calls so you are forced to sell to a middle man who takes a cut of all the family farms hard work just for making a delivery I could have made my damn self directly for the same time/fuel costs.

Organic is 2 years without pesticides and grown how the plant naturally grows without any GMOs. Sure its more work, but it is actually different than just calling it 'organic'. There's a lot you can do from allowing fields to lay fallow to planting specific types of mushrooms and then plowing them into the soil to reinvigorate your fields faster, and many things that can be done to increase yield without doing anything unnatural. Like growing complementary plants in alternating rows (yes I know its harder to harvest). The point being that 'organic' is more than just a word, and people like me are willing to pay more for it, keeping up your prices. Also try selling your food directly to resellers rather than through big distributors. Invest in a few delivery trucks and you will save quite a bit of money, even with the gas prices the way they are.

Not sure you rural area America. I rotate crops. I go by the organic check lists provided for me depending on customer and official definitions. I have to deliver everything anyway at our size. My point are bigger farms don't have the problems every small farmer I know has. My wife and I have full time jobs plus the farm. My teenagers work fast food and the farm. 30 years ago we could have made it on just farm income but factory farming and poor government policies hurt family farmers and help the corporations that own the politicians.
1 up, 2y,

I agree with that. Have you looked into bypassing distribution companies?
1 up, 2y,

I do bypass them for some of my harvest. It would rot without them though. Most places won't buy the amounts of corn or soy I sell directly because it isn't enough.
0 ups, 2y,

Well there's your problem right there. Growing soy. 90% of soy is GMO.

It also fertilizers my soil in crop rotation and can be harvested with equipment I owned before the situation got this bad. I could switch to potatoes if I wanted to buy more equipment or another less profitable bean that I have little experience with. I have considered going all gmo and raising hogs on land I own that is unstable for farming but IDK.
0 ups, 2y,

Yeah, that's a pretty rough decision to make, but maybe you can find another plant that can fertilize your soil in crop rotation, like those mushrooms I mentioned. Do you let a field fallow every 7 years or sooner?
Here's a good read on the subject: https://e360.yale.edu/features/why-its-time-to-stop-punishing-our-soils-with-fertilizers-and-chemicals

Yes, but cover crops, mushrooms, and other rotational crops is not. Saving $60,000 on not using fertilizer is also not 'pretty basic'.
0 ups, 2y
Native Americans have been doing it for thousands of years, no gov't subsidies and John Deeres and chemicals required. It was as basic as farming can get...

OK, but why are supermarkets running out of food after you've grown so much of it? What's even the point of all that hard work if that food isn't even ending up on someone's table? Doesn't that seem strange to you?

Instead of complaining about it, tell us what the problem is. Is it not enough roads connecting your farm to the supermarkets? Is someone TAKING the food, do we need to get law enforcement or the military involved? Is the food spoiling too quickly, is it a technology issue where you need access to refrigeration? Do you need trained engineers to consult on the problem? As long as everyone is paying their taxes including yourself, we can figure it out, whatever it is.

So I'm looking at this meme...then what you wrote...then back to this meme...
And I'm wondering how a guy growing vegetables in his garden to eat/store/sell at a market or something and not wanting to give large portions of his farm/products to people who didnt put the work in (I guess an analogy for taxation and socialist worker 'rights'), has any affiliation to what you just wrote

Presumably he's selling his produce, right? Otherwise, what's 40% of it got to do with ANYTHING?

And presumably, the supermarkets he's selling the food to are the ones that are running out of food?

So, the food's being grown on the farm, but not actually being eaten. Which doesn't surprise ME in a society where the farmer is refusing to pay his taxes, but don't YOU have trouble explaining that?

You don't get taxed 40% of something you don't sell. You're basically trying to tell me that the meme didn't say what it says.
2 ups, 2y
Reference would be to the government taking “surplus” food from people during a shortage. Not a 40% tax on what he sells. With the government defining what surplus is.

Abby, the food is ending up on his own table. The food is for him. So it does end up on someone’s table. One of the benefits of which is he is self sufficient and not be a burden to the government or the public welfare system.

"the food is ending up on his own table. The food is for him. So it does end up on someone’s table." - I know that and you know that.

I was replying to another player here (that I won't mention by name lest I get a timer) that thought he'd make the point that wasn't there when s/he/it said "What's even the point of all that hard work if that food isn't even ending up on someone's table?"

I know that there's a lot of shit flying around on this thread, but you've got to keep it connected. No need to mansplain it.

The meme says he's being taxed 40%. That's the focal point of the meme. The entire meaning of the meme falls apart without it.

Why is he being taxed 40% on something he's NOT trading?

It makes no sense. You are obviously trying to change the meaning of the meme after the fact.
2 ups, 2y,
1 reply
Hmmmm. The original meme says 40% but not what that that 40% means. I didn’t consider it to mean taxes. I took the main focal point of the meme to be that he shouldn’t be forced to give the food that he grew for his own table by his own sweat and money to other people who weren’t as industrious. It should be his choice. I don’t see the specific number as particularly relevant to that basic premise. 30%, 20%, whatever number you put there to reflect the current tax rate doesn’t change the central point as far as I can see. Can you agree that if the basic premise of the meme is that government shouldn’t take his produce against his will that he has a point?
[deleted]

Ok. And you don't think this very overtly and very obviously was intended as a reference to taxation? Like, oh my god, how terrible it would be that 40% of my production would go to society BUT I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT TAXES EVERYBODY - that's what you're going with?
2 ups, 2y,

Calm down. Breathe. Ok, let’s assume you are correct and he’s complaining about a 40% tax rate. My question would then be “so what?” He has a right to complain if he wishes. Doesn’t he?

Actually I did read it. Your reply doesn’t answer my question. I think we’ve got a “different talking points” situation here. We conservatives are essentially talking about government overreach and you are talking about something else. Like that meme of two people (one on the left and one on the right) looking at a figure on the ground. One person sees a 6 and the other sees a 9.

From a debate stance saying “ok, but why is your parameter happening” is a separate line of inquiry from the original question. The OP stated “if the supermarkets run out of food”. Not “if I’m being taxed 40%”. Reading between the lines, he’s saying “if the large scale food chain collapses, government should not yank 40% of my own produce away from me against my will.” That line “if the supermarkets run out of food” spells out the scenario under question. It’s a predicate phrase that clarifies the subsequent statement, as an English major might say.

"What's even the point of all that hard work if that food isn't even ending up on someone's table?"

Because there's nothing wrong with growing more than what you and your family can use right here and now. Families have been canning and preserving at home for centuries. You produce your food in the summer and put it up to get you through the winter.

The true liberals don't get that, so you're not alone. Look up Aesop's fable "The Ant and the Grasshopper.
