I was taught decades ago that no federal, state, county or city government official or employee of any kind are the 1st responder. We tend to call the police or firemen 1st responders but they are not. They never were.

YOU are the 1st responder. Your safety and the safety of those around you is YOUR responsibility.

You should know the basics of protecting yourself. FEMA knows this very well and has created the Community Emergency Response Team program. Look into that. Become CERT certified, it's free and should be offered through your city.

Get fire extinguishers for your house and get firearms. Learn how to use both. CERT training will teach you how to use a fire extinguisher and teach you basic medical training. The NRA can teach you gun safety.

The idea for CERT is to prepare citizens in the event of a natural disaster but that training can be applied anywhere.

After you have stabilized the emergency and people are safe, then call 911. It it is a natural disaster that effects your city, county or even state, the police and/or firemen may not get to your neighborhood for days or weeks.

If you are in a blue state your police may not even show up because they have been defunded.

Hope for the best but prepare for the worst. Be a sheepdog not a sheep or a wolf.

I believe it was Jimmy Carter who coined the phrase 1st responder to make people think they can let others take charge of your protection. We are all too scared to defend our homes because of laws. Also to have food storage is gone.

The USCCA was created to protect those who use a firearm for self-defense against leftist judges. They offer insurance and legal advice. What worries me is that the Church I belong to has been encouraging food storage for decades. We even have facilities around to country where you can can your own food. Obama found out about them when he was president and shut some of them down. He didn't like that people could can their own food. So the ones that stayed open quickly changed from allowing you to can your own food, to them doing it for you.

The left has no problem coming for you guns, I can see them coming for your food storage also.

a) if no one had guns, then why/who would need a gun?
b) yes, it is better to have a gun but not need one, but if no one had guns, when would you need a gun in the first place?

I don't deny that America could stand to have a few less guns, but taking them away from the law-abiding citizens first is the absolute worst way to go about it.

As has been said over and over ad infinitum, criminals don't care about gun laws. They have no problem with buying illegal guns from illegal merchants. If you take legal guns away from law-abiding citizens, all you do is create easy targets for the criminals.

Just look at Chicago: strictest gun control laws in the US, and one of the highest rates, if not THE highest rate of gun violence in the US.

And getting a gun legally is already more highly regulated and far more difficult than you think, despite what most "liberals" want you to believe. You can't just walk into a Walmart and buy a gun as easy as buying some dog food or shampoo.

I don't think that is true. If you are a felon they have laws against that but criminals do not follow laws. You take away guns the law abiding like myself would be defenseless. The problem is not enforcing the mental health laws already on the books.
