This meme could resemble a more sensible EV: an electric car powered by a fuel cell instead of a battery. The fuel cell would be petroleum powered. The resulting car would be more reliable (electric motors are more reliable than engines), vastly more fuel efficient than an engine powered car, and of course- the re-charging and "range anxiety" issues would be non-existent (the car could be re-fueled in a few minutes at existing gas stations). The greenies would never allow it, though: a petroleum fuel cell produces some carbon dioxide (though with far lower carbon emissions than internal combustion engines). The environmentalist's battery powered quest for so-called Zero-Emissions Perfection (just ignore the cradle-to-grave toxicity of the batteries and that pesky powerplant, ok?) prevents them from allowing something that would be a vast improvement. By the way, petroleum fuel cells are being manufactured already for stationary power systems.
