I’ll elaborate.
Hillary stupidly called out voters without understanding the choices we’re offered. I get the impression the people who voted for Trump and Republicans are generally unhappy with who is legislating.
It’s so much easier to just dismiss a group of people and be frustrated with their choices of A or B. That doesn’t mean Republicans are always a better choice in every single situation. There people who are not just unhappy with Democrats but Republicans as well. Surely, if a Republican were in office and you were unhappy with them, you wouldn’t be so partisan as to believe they are your only choice.
Perhaps you are!
Most people, however, do not consider just the party they vote for but rather the individual candidates. And if in those specific states the incumbent is Republican yet this general unhappiness to their legislations or policy remains; then it is reasonable to vote for someone else.
And not just third party. Some people are aware that in some cases they don’t have a realistic third option. Heck, in my state, we didn’t even /have/ a Democrat run for a senate seat. This is why, I think, people were so enthusiastic to vote for Trump. While he got the Republican nomination, he isn’t really a Republican. Or, at least, he isn’t generally viewed as the typical Republican. Trump is not the only exception to this rule.
Whether you like it or not, there are a handful of Democrats who try to appeal to both moderates and conservatives just as there are Republicans who try to appeal to both moderates and liberals. As they should!
It’s far too easy to lay all the frustrations and unhappiness onto a singular party and their voters. While it won’t get you to the front page of the Politics stream, it will certainly lessen your frustrations if you actually try to understand their point of view.
Thinking of any group as the enemy will radicalize anyone. If you find the alternative so unsatisfying then you can at least consider to know your enemy first. Perhaps you think you already know them but ask yourself this:
If you’re viewing people as your enemy based solely on their values (or lack thereof) then perhaps you’re emulating the very behavior you find so despicable.
Because your way is more just? More righteous? What if they think the same? How do we bridge the gap? Do you even want to? And if you don’t care to make peace with people you disagree with then I must ask:
How is what you’re doing any different?
