I know Trump makes it look that way because he doesn't pay taxes but this isn't a free for all. We pay taxes for the infrastructure of having sewer and water pipes on our property, roads that we can drive on, a fire department that we can call if the place catches on fire, police we can call if we get in trouble, salaries and training for all the above, free public schools for our kids to go to, electricity, air and heat for those schools, books and computers for kids to use, salaries for high quality teachers... The list goes on. You want to live off the grid and homeschool your kids, that's great. Property taxes are a lot lower out in the sticks. But that's not the reality for a lot of us city folk.

I completely agree. Property taxes say that you don't really own your land. you are just renting it from the government. Income taxes also have to go. I believe the government should dramatically cut spending, and only tax us on money we spend on conveniences, such as someone buying a boat or something.

It's been 12 years, no idea how I'm getting away with it but apparently state laws says after about 20 years it becomes legal regardless.

Property tax not only discourages real estate monopoly but it is an actual allocated tax where the money goes to the community. It is much better than income tax.

OMG. yes you OWN YOUR HOUSE. Taxes pay for the fire station and other services you need in case of emergencies. Property taxes typically pay for schools in your area. People say well I don't have children in schools, you may not, but you want the area you live in to be educated dont you?

Did you know that has taxes pay for roads? Wow what a concept.

What happens if you don't pay all those taxes you just mentioned? They can legally take it.

If you owned it, they could only confiscate the value to retrieve what they are owed. But a property worth hundreds of thousands of dollars can be confiscated for a tax debt of as little as a few hundred dollars. It is more like being evicted for failure to pay rent than them simply collecting taxes they are due. They don't refund the difference is value between your property and the taxes they are owed either. So when they confiscate it, they often come out ahead.

How are they supposed to confiscate the value of what you owe? Let’s say you owe $500 is taxes that you can’t or refuse to pay. Would they rent out one of your bedrooms for a month?

But that means they would have to sell your property, thus, you’re still getting evicted for not paying “rent”.
