Well, I got that information from the boomers themselves. And then I mean the true boomers, those who were born during the baby boom. You see my parents are both boomers, and there's a lot about my parents I blame them for (and am still beyond furious about), but I still remember my old man telling me with pride how he saved money for a reel to reel tape recorder, as that was the item to have when he was a teenager. Not to mention that he was not the only boomer I know, as it's easy to guess that many friends of my parents, and thus people I know well too, are boomers as well. And I did hear stories from them as the reel to reel machines were not exactly easy to use. So I got my information first hand.
And for me the cassette recorder was my item I would carry with pride as a teen, and if you call me a boomer you'd be claiming my mother gave birth to me at the age of 3 max (she was actually 24 years old back then), so that evidence should suffice as evidence that I'm too young for that title.
