Personally, I think we should have declared victory and packed our bags after the successful OBL raid in 2011.

Bush should have made finding OBL more of a priority than he did. And since 2011, Obama and Trump have both missed several opportunities to wind this down.

So, plenty of blame to go around, across three administrations, for letting this fruitless nation-building war drag out for the better part of 19 years.

Now we just gotta hope ISIS or something like it doesn't set up shop in Afghanistan and force us to return, like we had to in Iraq within just a few years after that troop withdrawal.

The Middle East sucks and it seems the only thing we can count on is getting it wrong over and over again.

I agree with all of that. I have lost people to a war for no other reason than political hacks didn't want to look like losers. Funny enough, they never sent their own kids.

Finding common ground on important issues always feels good.

These types of issues talked about around a table over a few days would find a lot of common ground, here we are doing well just to able to comment without childish insults. I don't get many visitors that can hold conversations. To be honest, I ignore anyone that just attacks to give themselves a false sense of security and power. Drop by again sometime, I like to have my world view challenged even more than I like finding common ground.

You haven't been there. What he did was deal with the power controlling the area, the Afghan government doesn't control much. The will not end all the violence but anything is more than has been done in 18 years, your dismissal of this is childish.

What the Taliban did when they had power was a disaster for the Afghan people, especially women. Giving them a route back to establishing a religious dictatorship that makes Iran look benign is a sell out of all human decency. I understand he wants to get the American troops out as he is right, they cannot stay there forever, but doing a deal with the devil? I never knew you guys were so supportive of Islamic Fascism. Only Trump can make his supporters think doing a deal with the people who hid and supported Bin Laden is a good idea.

There were three main groups that wanted the war to continue, the Taliban (didn't want to lose power), political hacks (didn't want to lose face) and defense contractors (didn't want to lose money). The deal is a deal with one devil vs a reward to three. Not ideal but not horrible, especially for military families.

I agree, good for the US, bad for Afghans.

The Afghan's, like other Islamic countries, will find a balance between modern rights and radicalized Islam. That fight should never have included Westerners.
