Not to mention people should still have a right to hunt, even if they suck at it. And they'll need all those rounds to practice, or keep trying.

See, now this I can agree on, and I'm actually left of center (left libertarian to be exact).

You seem really eager to give up your rights.

I’d rather take one bullet out of the Russian Roulette gun of daily existence in America than retain rights I don’t even exercise

We’re they armed or not? I don’t know. Probably. I didn’t feel like finding out

But the experience didn’t turn me into a paranoid freak who thinks guns confer safety

What do I do now? I just try to stay more aware of my surroundings, and I never carry more cash than I’d feel comfortable parting with if needed.

What’s a much less risky option than withdrawing a gun in a hostile situation like that? Just handing over the cash.

I’ll let other folks and the authorities be the heroes

Who cares about people who do exercise that right, amirite? If I don't use something myself, nobody needs it. For instance, I don't exercise my right to protest.. we can do away with that across the board because sometimes protests turn into riots.

We should not make bad laws (gun control) based on emotion. Rational, common sense should rule the day, making gun ownership less restrictive for law abiding, checked citizens.

Banning guns will not stop the sick people who use them for mass shootings. Until you hold the people accountable, nothing will. You home protection ideas are ineffective, too. If you've got two shots and they've three, you essentially have an expensive baseball bat. When you address the fact that our society makes sick people, you will reduce shootings and the need for home defense shotguns.

But that would mean all of us would have to change, instead of making someone else change.

Exactly. No one ever wants to actually solve the problem by looking at its root: the mental health crisis, and the adjoining stigma around mental illness. They only want to frame it to suit their agenda, those on both the left and the right are equally guilty of this. The right blames 'violent' video games, the left blames guns, but no one is willing to actually tackle the issue at the center of problem: our society's failure to treat mental illness. Our track record with mental health in this country is terrible, we need to fix and improve our convoluted, broken healthcare system.

Actually, I think I'd take this a step farther. I agree with you, but I also think that the system we have treats the "mentally ill," without addressing the factors that make our society as a whole unhealthy and produce mentally ill people. I am suggesting that some of the mental illness that we see is due to nurture (or the lack of it, perhaps) rather than nature. We cannot medicate or legislate our way to a healthier society. I don't mean thought police or super-restrictive measures, or anything too "controlly." ;)
