Because Americans suck so bad at real football that we created our own game called "Football," which is basically just bastardized Rugby, that we only play so that we can be the best at "Football."

Actually American football is alot more dangerous due to the fact that there is padding the players hit with all their might causing greater risk and guaranteed long term brain Injury. Not to mention AF players are vastly larger, heavier, stronger. But you can stay on that bandwagon your riding if you chose to. Facts are facts though.

Evolution of the Rules...

kind of like how Evolution of the Language saw the 'other Football' called "Soccer" because they started as the same game, but the Soccer version became 'Association Rules Football' or some such... and the 'SOC' in Association got isolated for brevity, and soon 'SOCcer' became a word

Originally hands were hardly used at all. Years later someone invented the "forward pass". The first year, that team absolutely kicked butt because none of the other teams had a defense against that new tactic. The next year other teams adopted it, and eventually it became the standard approach.

The same with the "shotgun" formation. Up until around 1975 no one used it on any regular basis. The first year it was used because the Cowboys had a pretty bad offensive line and having the quarterback 5 yards back cut down on sacks and forced fumbles.

What the aristocracy played on horseback, the peasants played on their feet. The horses are gone now, but the name lives on.
