Actually, the original Confederate flag was the Bonnie Blue flag, which looks almost identical to this flag emoji; the only difference being a darker shade of blue: 🇸🇴. Then, it was changed to something that looked like the original 13-colonies American flag, except with only three stripes. Finally, it was changed to a stars & bars square on the top-left corner, surrounded by a white background with a large red stripe covering the rightmost side. The stars & bars flag we know and love (but the left hates), which was actually the Virginia battle flag, became the popular symbol of the CSA because, unlike the Bonnie Blue & the 13-colonies US flag lookalike, it was the most iconic and unique, yet unlike the third flag with the white/red background surrounding the stars & bars square, it made for great patterns on Dixie-themed merchandise.
