I believe in that case he was being sarcastic because most felt that way in his environment. Another anti Christian brought that up and I researched it but that's all I can remember right now and i know it won't placate you but i'll look into it.
Again, context of the time matters. You could sell YOURSELF into 'slavery' to get out of debt in biblical times. The commandments gave them a day off when most of the world worked 7 days a week. After 7 years, they, and everyone, would have their debts cleared if they hadn't already worked it off. That 'slavery' wasn't the later muslim castration one or the American whip, chain and lynch one.
Yeah, but this 'cult leader' had their best interests at heart. The Bible is filled with history (wars, movement, peoples, practises) and philosophy. Read Ecclesiastes. Or Jesus's parables. It's not all muh apple and snakes and talking Donkeys. They thought the Hittites were a myth until 150 years ago. If you open your heart and read, it'll come through but I needed guidance and explanation because I ain't smart and it goes deep. I saw how passages from multiple books all fit together towards the same teaching. It's like playing a piano. Mashing keys get you nowhere but when you know keys, chords, roots etc, then you make beautiful music. There's a real reason why the canon of the Bible is what it is. For example, book of Enoch contradicts the hell out of basic themes in all the books.
Seriously, i was always agnostic until 10 years ago. I hated organized religion worse then you, just another fedora tipper. I mean, i hated it.
