When they come to take your freedoms, they will not do it with nukes, jets or tanks. It will be men with guns, and they will more than likely work for 'your' government. Gun ownership does more to protect from 'invasion from within' than foreign invaders. Your self-defense is your responsibility.

They are taking your freedoms right now. They are taking your country right now. Your gun, my gun, they are sitting home quiet. No shots will be fired.

That Japanese quote is fake. But yes guns do give power to the people, for the good or bad.

Also helps that the US has all the best "toys", given that their military budget is the highest in the world, more than the next 7 or 8 countries combined, including China and Russia.

It's a nice thought, though China's 2.5 million is only active duty, it does not count reserves or conscripts in time of war. Even with the advantage of a citizenry that knows how to shoot even before training, the Chinese will still have MUCH larger reserves of manpower to draw from. They have nearly a billion people more than we do, and there is nothing on this earth that will bring us equal to them in the numbers game, 2A or not. Technology and knowledge are our biggest advantages and hopefully things will stay that way. Luckily they could never reach us anyways, so I guess it is a moot point. :)

I don't know, the Vietnamese and the Taliban have stopped the "mightiest" nation on earth. A guerrilla force is very effective. Plus, our people are already here, they have a logistics problem.
5 ups, 5y,

That logistics problem ties into them never reaching us - they may have millions of men available to their military but they could never ship them here en masse and keep them supplied in hostile territory. The chinese army is scary only in asia itself. And I agree, guerillla forces ARE very effective, and why I think leftists arguing against the 2nd amendment because "lol jets" are morons. My point is simply that the second amendment does not even come close to making us numerically even with them. :) It's an advantage they have that we cannot catch up to them in, and we should at least recognize it. There's no world where we can field an army the size of China's. Putting our army where we want it, however... :P

No, but it does mean that no nation would be able to invade and conquer us either. It also means that our 1.8 million man army would have a hard time with a military coup.

Just got our mail at 9:36. PM. Been like that for three weeks now. The mailman told me millenials don't want to work. They start, and quit in a few days.

Your 100+ million include those softies playing Fallout4, old geezers, and a bunch of drunks who go deer hunting once a year. Add to that the majority owning a pistol for self defense (in case anyone tries to break in their ritzy condo) and recreational target practice shooters (Got the paper dude right through the heart with only 16 tries!) and you don't quite exactly have an instant army as prepared and hungry enough as when the South did when they lost 153 years ago.

Also, China has no need to invade the USA, its biggest customer and owner of its currency savings, it would be shooting itself in the proverbial foot. It also doesn't give a crap, and would gleefully nuke this non existent extra army of out of shape plump butts before they peeked out from under their beds.

There's also a huge difference between the unfamiliar rough mountainous terrain of Viet Nam and Afganistan and our wonderfuly paved roads to Walmart. Bomb a few bridges and ports, and the masses will be singing the praises of Mao hoping to get their Made In China goods back on the shelves to buy in under two weeks.

And please explain how guns are used defensively between 300,000 and three million times a year if every gun owner is an idiot who spends all day playing Fallout4?

Tiny. The army reserve is less than two hundred thousand strong. China's has millions.

America still has a better trained army.

That's true, but training is something that can be changed significantly easier than demographics. The level of training of the US army 60 years ago and the level of training of the US army today are very different. The difference between modern chinese training and chinese training in the future could also be. We are the superior nation militarily - for now. But if we don't actively strive to keep ahead, we WILL be overtaken.

Japan would definitely side with us, but even with the japanese, the australians, the british, and the south koreans, we would still be badly outnumbered if we ever tried to land in china.

The Germans had superior tech inthe 30's and 40's.... tech won't save you. Nukes and economic leverage may.
1 up, 5y
Actually, german tech was superior only in rocketry and jet technology. They were behind almost across the board in terms of engineering, electronics, and computing. German tanks had HORRIBLE mechanical reliability problems (the first panthers broke down constantly due to transmission problems) and were a nightmare to do maintenance on. Germans lacked sophisticated radar systems, while the UK and US had radar integrated onto ships, some aircraft, and had networks of radar stations across both theaters of war. Germans never came even close to completing their own atomic weapons program (though granted due to lack of uranium ore), and most of their greatest minds fled the country to the west to escape the Nazis. The idea that the german military was tech advanced is nothing more than propaganda. The average German infantryman used nearly the same rifle as his grandfather in WW2. The average german pilot even in 1944 was flying the same type of aircraft that they'd had in 1940, while allied air development had continued at a frightening pace. A handful of jets(which actually did perform quite well) did not make up for the other 99% of the Luftwaffe flying obsolete aircraft in the face of modern spitfires, P51s, and other advanced prop craft which the german air force could not match in numbers.
https://www.zdnet.com/article/the-wwii-german-army-was-80-horse-drawn-business-lessons-from-history/

Their "tech advantage" was really nothing more than Goebbels' love child. Unfortunately the rest of the world bought it too, except those that look into actual WW2 history rather than the glorified version we see on TV.

btw - You cannot invade the mainland United States. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.
It has been declared this attribution is "unsubstantiated and almost certainly bogus, even though it has been repeated thousands of times in various Internet postings. There is no record of the commander in chief of Japan’s wartime fleet ever saying it.", according to source Brooks Jackson in "Misquoting Yamamoto" at Factcheck.org (11 May 2009), which cites source Donald M. Goldstein, sometimes called "the dean of Pearl Harbor historians", writing "I have never seen it in writing. It has been attributed to the Prange files [the files of the late Gordon W. Prange, chief historian on the staff of Gen. Douglas MacArthur] but no one had ever seen it or cited it from where they got it."

To make it a waste of time for other countries to build up arms. If you can't compete with the US, why bother? It keeps the number of adversaries low - in theory. Then came terrorism.

For NATO and our allies that you are so against paying more :) If we weren't paying for the defense of the world, our budget would not reflect that we pay for the defense of the world.
Maybe you ought to try logic sometime.

Spin it how you want, invading or subjugating an armed populous is going to be more difficult than an unarmed one...period. Guns = Power. Some want the government to have all the power, some want the people to have power too.

Not really. Russia already did it to the USA with no shots fired.
