No. Conservatives want to CONSERVE the founding principles of this country. Freedom, individualism, limited government, private property rights. The status quo has strayed quite far from these founding principles. True Conservatives disavow, denounce and condemn the clan, neo-Nazis, and racists, regardless of who they claim to support.

Most of the founders WERE against slavery, including a few who owned slaves. Call them hypocrites if you will, but the fact is that they had to compromise with the slave owning southern states to have a snowball's chance in hell of defeating the British. Lincoln himself frequently cited the founders and the declaration as reasons to fight against slavery. The founders being "Dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."

Replace "True Conservatives" with mainstream American conservatives and then your point reaches proper validity. In reality, "true" anything hardly exists; there's no such thing as a "true conservative" or "true liberal". The majority of the Alt Right consider themselves to be "true conservatives", as do neocons, the AFA, etc. In reality everyone has a varying set of beliefs. It just so happens that a large number of people disavow the KKK.

Replace "mainstream American conservatives" with "mainstream American Republicans" and I'd agree with you. Most self-identifying "Republicans" in Congress (and most of the rest of government) are center-right at best. Their strategy for decades has been "abandon principles, and just stay slightly right of the Democrats, and we'll get reelected". Unfortunately, the Democrat party has lurched so far left, that most "Republicans" today are farther left than JFK was.

Fair enough. The Republicans have been abandoning principles that many actual conservatives hold. Not to mention how I've separated myself from the Democratic party when it became either social left or elitist left (I'm a moderate-left).

I've been thinking about a new party the called "Mod party", short for "moderate", which actually dedicates itself to tolerance between lefties and righties. The problem, however, is if it gets mainstream, it might create an echo chamber which could threaten the tolerance ideal..
