They claim to want "sensible gun laws," but the definition of "sensible" seems to vary with your political leanings. My idea of sensible gun laws is to first enforce the laws that are already in effect, such as those against buying a gun for someone who can't otherwise get one. Enforce background checks on every purchase. Stiffer penalties for those who commit crimes with a gun. Keep them out of the hands of bad people and preserve my rights as they currently are. I have committed no crime so I should not be held accountable for those who do.

Do all of this and I'll talk new laws.

Pretty much what I want to see to. I was NRA trained to shoot and while they have gone off the deep end demanding zero gun laws, I am using that same training now to teach my granddaughters to shoot and be safe. But be warned, the all or nothing demands could lead to an answer you don’t want. Work together and while you might have a slightly harder time buying a gun, it will still be legal for you to do so.

I believe that there should be compromise and a focus on our nation instead of political parties. The problem is that both sides are so extreme and unwilling to compromise that nothing gets done except name-calling. If certain conditions are meeting I would certainly be willing to compromise and wait a reasonable period of time to buy a gun. I would still get it and it's not like I need another one right now anyway...

the "well-regulated" is part of the justification clause of the 2nd amendment, not the functional clause. The actual meat of the 2nd amendment is that "the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed".

I have to disagree with you. It would be crazy to let everyone own guns regardless of their criminal history. Even during the time of the Founders if you committed a crime they would take your gun.

Exactly! This goes hand-in-hand with the concept of "forfeiture of rights". Basically, people can have their rights restricted as punishment for their actions. Someone who fails to pay debts has their property rights taken away to a certain degree. Someone who initiates a violent assault has their right to life temporarily suspended. Someone who has a long history of violent crimes surrenders their right to purchase weaponry.

It's not about necessity, it's about rights. Also, if the armed citizenry is to be a contingency against the possibility of a tyrannical government, then being armed as well as or better than the government sure would help.

Also, more murders are committed with handguns than rifles. The weapons that are easiest to conceal are the easiest to assault people with. If you're going to arbitrarily separate "assault" weapons from every other weapon, then you would want to ban handguns
