I guess I figured that more than a decade of suicide bombings would have retired this saying...

I guess the saying is live and let live; a little humour is good for the soule. The people engaged in suicide bombings aren't going forth because someone said this. I'm more concerned of the mass killings because of the overuse/abuse brought about by this type of humour.

Actually, the Japanese flew their pilots until they died; whereas the USA rotated experience pilots back to training schools. Those films of Japanese pilots happily toasting each other before a one-way flight were mostly propaganda bullshit. They were just as scared and angry as any other soldier who be in the same situation. One suicide pilot strafed his HQ on the way out.

I think so. In one case you have a soldier taking on overwhelming odds, but he can at least in principle trust to luck and his martial skill to have a chance to overcome. In the other the soldier is reduced to the level of a component of an expendable weapon; his death is part of the plan.
