Al Qaeda is considered fundamentalist. It's a militant group aimed to unite Muslims and attack against "enemies" of Islam on a world wide scale, despite the majority of Muslims condemning the organization.

The Quran, overall, condemns violence and modern scholars/non-fundamentalist muslims interpret it in the way Christians interpret the Bible despite both of their dated means of justification (violence, slavery, etc.)

And just to put it out there, a religion is worshipped by different people meaning that how they perceive it could be entirely different from how another person may see it such as abolitionists condemning slavery in the Antebellum period while slaveowners quoted scripture as a paternalistic means of preserving their power over other human beings.
