I just read this and think, why do we have so many military bases in other people’s backyards?

Imagine if Mexico decided to put its own military bases in highly populated red states. I don’t think you’d be very happy about that either.

Is this a 'rhetorical' thought question, or are you serious?

Assuming you're serious, the answer is, whether we like it or not, it goes with being the world's police force. A job, btw, which we are horrendous at. At least since January 20, 2021.

Typically these bases are approved (and usually welcomed, I believe) by the host country. With Iraq, they probably have no choice but to let us keep whatever military force there that we want. I don't know if that's the case with Syria, as the world seems to be treating it the way a cat treats a litter box.

52 years says acceptance is irrelevant, as half a century of brutal dictators dictating ain't subject to an endorsement of someone who is unaware of those basic facts.

I said “if you accept”. Not a correction a qualification. Who is the legitimate government of Syria? Assad was overthrown. Just because he is still there doesn’t mean he is legitimate. Many UN states accept the SNP as the legitimate government. There’s some basic facts you ignore. So we are supported by the government and the Assad governemnt and forces are aligned with the Iranians and Russians. It must be hard to be wrong and misinformed so often.
