The media protects the left because they are a part of the same social sub-class. In the same way that you might choose to support a business run by someone who went to the same college as you though you might not know them personally, or support your city's sports teams, they turn a blind eye to the faults, flaws and transgressions of one of their own. Whites defend whites, blacks defend blacks, etc, the media protects the left.
