The feeling at the time was that those mental patients were basically being incarcerated without ever committing a crime. Those dangerous lunatics were all released on society, the asylums closed, an the number of lunatics increased over the years with no viable way to ensure that they wouldn’t shoot up a school, for example.

I am certain your county has a 72 hour LOONY BIN. Mine does. You get so many trips to it, then the court steps in and starts taking control over you.

We do have people who are hauled away for psychiatric evaluation. But that almost never happens before they commit a crime. After a crime is committed, if they survive the mayhem that they created, they will be hauled to a facility for the criminally insane. But it is very rare that they will be put into any kind of institution for more than a couple of days without committing a serious crime first.
