I am.... confused. Are there not already federal regulations regarding law enforcement? They're hired by a government agency and as a result *are* government agents
The point of the 'defund the police' mumbo jumbo is different depending on who you ask.
The main thing, I would say, is that police are generally underspecialized. In order to have more specialized and better trained people, police actually need *more* funding, and more rigorous checks. Not to make then faceless brutal soldiers, but to hold them accountable and make sure you don't have the wrong person for a job. More specialization means a higher quality of law enforcement, which equates to better performance and more objective reasoning, which, since the whole police corruption debacle that's been going on, has been called for numerous times.
