In 2021, we can talk about how back in the days of the Pilgrims, they came to America without papers or passports. Ditto for the Spanish Conquistadors who largely took over Southern and Central America. But for the vast majority of the existence of the United States of America (which did not exist with the Pilgrims), we like every other country put into place rules for immigration.
A lot of people who talk about Ellis Island never mention those who were turned away for all kinds of reasons (no job waiting for them, they did not have a sponsor here, etc). Now I will admit that despite our having rules and regulations for immigration to this country, for the past several years those laws were ignored by both Democrats and Republicans. The Republicans wanted the cheap labor and looked the other way. The Democrats know that with welfare programs those who newly arrived would eventually vote for Democrats.
But the pendulum has swung. And the vast majority of Americans want stricter controls to be put into place on who enters this country. The 911 commission came to the conclusion that we needed to do this to keep terrorists out. And other people came to the very same conclusion for a variety of reasons.
It’s one thing to look the other way when people are pouring into this country. It is another thing entirely to stand at a podium during a presidential debate and have 100% of the debate participants raise their hands to say that they want free health care for illegal immigrants (while at the same time fining people who did not participate in Obamacare). Ditto for the other social welfare benefit programs.
