I’m as liberal as one can be on this site but I think “normal” the most common way of something being a certain way given some amount of variation. Aka “the norm.” So heterosexual. Right handed. Being black in Ghana. Cars having 4 tires. Being male OR female (since it’s essentially 50/50), not being a little person, etc.

I guess I define normal as the normal range of things one sees in a mid-sized sample. Maybe that's just my blue-eyed minority-think kicking in, but if you could round up a representative group of 200 people and have a few of whatever in it, it's normal.

Especially in the US, where we often don't have a single large majority of any particular ethnic group (especially in the big cities) a parliamentary view of normality is better. I don't want us to say, "The majority (51.3%) thinks, looks, or acts in a certain way, therefore everyone else is abnormal." It is normal to be a Republican in Atlanta, even if it isn't the way the majority of Atlanta voted, right?

I was going by the old Kinsey statistic, which is probably inflated, but the lower numbers of people self-reporting their orientation is not very persuasive either. Health Departments have a category they call MSM. Doesn't mean what you think: it means men who reject the label "gay" but routinely have sex with men.

I meant that, here in the US, and also in Northern Europe, we might think of being blue-eyed as "normal". In fact, across the globe, only about 8-10% of people are blue-eyed, so it's about equivalent to left-handedness.

I'm going to assume (on the grounds that humans are human) that gayness and left-handedness are evenly distributed all over the earth, even if cultural pressure means that they're more expressed in some places than others. But I'm going to strongly resist the idea that it's not normal to be any of those things.
