Noticing some of the younger users are leaving the flip because of a few trolls. What's the best way to tackle a troll?

• Ignore them, trolls crave attention so don't give it to them.

• Don't take anything they say personally. Most trolls don’t actually believe what they’re posting and let's face it how well do they really know you?

• Take a screenshot, report abusive posts and utilise the new block feature.

•Tempting as it might be, don't make a meme calling them out. This is exactly the kind of reaction they are hoping to get out of you.

• While the best way to deal with a troll is to ignore them, if you must respond try to do so with humour. Learn to laugh at yourself and let them know that their abusive comments don't bother you. Trolls expect you to respond in anger, take the high ground and show them that you're above that.

I always wondered what happened to those trolls that they actually feel the need to troll hoping to feel better than others (while in fact the fact that they feel the need to do so is solid evidence of their uselessness and being weak and good for nothing).

What I did see what that some of my own memes became beschmudged because one of my commenters was somebody who was hunted down by trolls hoping he'd leave the site, and that is something truly unforgivable. Not only are they trying to actively make somebody's life her impossible. They are then also involving me in their affairs (and other people commenting on my memes) in their quarrels. I've already written a report to the administration about one user doing that.

I wonder that too. I would have thought that there must be something really missing in your life for anyone to take satisfaction from making others feel like shite.

Well in the end, I guess the Belgian comic (in the Dutch language) "Suske & Wiske" came up with wisdom by stating "Geluk vindt men niet door het te zoeken. Geluk vindt men door het te geven." (People do not find happiness by seeking it. People find happiness by giving it). Maybe the counts for unhappiness?

To date, all the Gonna-Go's and Suicideds have returned within 24 hours of their own death, heck, we've had people who've died of cancer make a return. DIED. OF. CANCER.

I do believe that some of the young users do get genuinely depressed by some of the comments they read on here. Some kids tend to take things too personally and don't have the better sense that adults do to take things in jest. It's usually pretty easy to tell the users who are genuinely not going to return Vs the attention seekers.

I set up a tribute stream for deleted memers and have had to remove several posts where users have set up new accounts only days after deleting. Some of them even stalk the comments to see what their friends had to say about them in their absence.

Seems pretty depraved to me that there are people out there who seem to get some sort of gratification out of making people believe they are going to kill themselves.

Here's an ongoing one.

The fact that they're chatting with (generally like minded) individuals instead of doing it is clear indication that they have no such intention.

I mean, hey, my so-called best friend has been dying from the same suicide (and a litany of terminal diseases) since I met her in 2000. It got such that when her daughter told me she got in a car accident once, I laughed till she explained that she had arrived there herself and it was true.

On this site I have a fatal (JustineWhite22 is the latest account) that was supposed to suicide a cpl of months ago because after a few replies one night, I wasn't flying over to Canberra to consumate the love she declared (yes, true love in ONE night!). Hasn't stopped the stalking since.

One time on FB someone linked me to what I thought was a Goth page. Was a bunch of Emos comparing fake suicide attempts and posting pics of their cutting. FUN FACT: The wrist is not located on the thigh!

The site I used to be on was an Alternative Rock site, so the forum was getting inundated by Emos, more than here. The older regs migrated to a secret FB group to escape the ruination wrought by these crybabies. To date, the only suicide was the one I mentioned, and like I said, he never said anything remotely indicating his intentions. Even his gf, who left after visiting for the weekend, was shocked. Although said she had some personal issues weighing him down, he never spoke like it was enough to end it all. And he was a tad older, not an Emo gen.

attention seeking* trend

(not really latest either. A site I joined in 2015 was plagued with them. The only one that actually did kill himself never told anyone he was going to, not even his gf who announced it. Same too, because unlike these whiny attention seekers, this fella was amazingly brilliant, witty, really cool. No indication he was going to do it)

I find that the people who are genuinely suffering from depression or suicidal thoughts tend to suffer in silence. I'm genuinely sorry to hear about your friend. Suicide is a particularly devastating way to lose someone.

I don't get why suicide is such a fashionable discussion. But I do agree, much of it seems like an attention topic.

Post nothing but pity about them. They call you newb or stupid, respond with something like "awww, you sound like someone hurt you." NOW THIS IS MOST IMPORTANT! Do not respond in anyway to their next post except to continue with the pity. "have you considered therapy?"

The trick is to know that a troll is looking for reaction. Sometimes just ignoring them completely is the same as a reaction they want and it can take time for them to give up. By ignoring their insults and turning the tables on them while "being" helpful will drive them away quick.

Personally I've been very fortunate to have avoided most of the trolls on this site, although I remember having to deal with a particularly vicious troll on another site that I used to frequent before I joined imgflip. The comments he made towards me were disgustingly misogynistic. I responded similarly to how you recommended, and was pleasantly surprised by the results. He even offered an apology claimed he was having a bad week and needed an outlet to vent his anger.

The hate on this site needs to end and the global MODs need to do a much better job or the positive-minded Flippers will leave this site. As some already have.

You have a good point there. Let end hate, once and for all!!!! That is why I just created the Judge-Free_Stream for that reason. I truly understand the pain some users have gone through, even I had that problem myself, but I fought back like a trooper. Now with all that said, who's with me?

If you're gonna scream, don't scream about how you are in the wrong, but just scream. Get the energy out.

There are online worksheets for you to fill out to make you feel better. Just look up "why is this happening to me... again?!" And you can find it there. They've helped me out for years!

Well, you basically already said it all... As long as you know you're awesome nothing can get to you. Just remember that you are great just the way you are and that people who "troll" you don't even deserve your attention. You're not gonna change their mind so just let them huff and puff into thin air. It doesn't matter what they say as long as you don't let it matter.

Remember kiddies words only have the power to hurt if they are true.
So if the words are hateful and false just shrug them off. & if they are hateful and true either ‘own it’ or ‘change it’.
