Nobody died in the "Civil War" to "free slaves". That is the rewritten history shoved down our throats for 150+ years. The war had absolutely nothing to do with slavery, but Lincoln's lust for money, power, and greed. He could not bear to see the U.S. lose 85% of its revenue in the form of excessive tariffs by the South leaving the Union. If the war was about "freeing the slaves" (which, by the way, were brought here by New England Yankees on the ships they built) then why did the North not first free the more than 429,000 slaves still in the Union AFTER the South seceded? Nope. Not about slavery. It was about eliminating States' Rights and establishing a strong centralized government, which we are still shackled with today.

It actually had to do with slavery, but not the only thing. It was one of the root issues. Good meme, though.

To be fair, you can't honestly say you know the mindset of every single white republican who fought in the war. Most likely at least /some/ fought because they believed in freedom for black people. Lincoln himself was racist, but not to the degree of believing they should be enslaved. He felt they should be free, but that they were inferior to white people and should be segregated, or preferably sent back home to Africa to be free there.

He said civil rights, not just the civil war. The 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were passed after the war and were not supported by the Democrats. The 13th amendment was passed by 100% of Republicans but only 16 Democrats voted in favor.

The 19th amendment was passed in 1920 and was also not supported by the Democrats.

Even the civil rights act of 1964 was supported by 76% of Republicans, but only 60% of the Democrats voted for it, and this was under a Democrat President.

Another interesting fact. The Republicans had their first black member of Congress in 1870 and had 34 black members of Congress before the Democrats voted in their first black member. The Democrats did not have a black member of Congress until 1934.

Another interesting tidbit about the civil rights act of 64, democrat senator Robert Byrd filibustered /against/ it. The same Robert Byrd who founded a chapter of the KKK and became it's grand cyclops, and who later "left" the KKK to become a "liberal" politician, because he "no longer agreed with the ideals of the KKK" (not an actual quote, an air-quotes quote), all before said filibuster occurred.

Also the same Robert Byrd who was an old family friend and mentor to Hillary Clinton.
