Your argument to him is that he has not presented any proof to show that this trend will continue to the predicted outcome. Asking as a counter-argument but not taking a side, can you provide any proof that the trend won't continue to reach that outcome? Presumably, you are suggesting that something will prevent this, the trend will not be allowed to reach this outcome. In past decades, one might have said gay marriage will 'never' happen and yet...

The point is that while it is a logical fallacy to assume the existence of a slippery slope without proof that the extreme example WILL happen, it is also a fallacy to assume that it will NOT happen. Claiming a slippery slope fallacy is not a valid rebuttal of the of SpursFanFromAround's comment because while Spurs provided no proof that it will occur, Bugglylememe provided no proof that it would not or could not. As you pointed out, we cannot assume that some event will never happen because it seems like it won't happen right now.

So what basis is there for claiming Spurs' comment to be a baseless slippery slope? No one here wants to believe that pedophilia could ever become an accepted behavior. Yet, how we say that it never will given the changes we have seen in the past 50 to 100 years? In the early 1970's, homosexuality was considered a mental disorder.

So while I agree that slippery slope can be a logical fallacy, we cannot just claim it as an argument ender. You still have to prove it, because slippery slopes do exist.

Because the facts speak for themselves. The gays at one time denied the marriage thing, saying that they weren't seaking that, and then wala, they now want it, and people gave in and allowed it to happen. A slippery slope IS NOT a logical fallacy when taking into consideration human nature. When allowed, humans tend towards self-destruction.
