If the criminals know your are unarmed, they could be better off breaking in while you are home and threatening you to turn over your valuables. The very possibility of an armed response can save lives and prevent break-ins. Of course in my case my neighbor is a cop and thus armed so your neighbor owning a gun can help as well.

Except my point that that they might have do it if they knew you are not armed. In the most of the USA that isn't much of a problem but some want a public gun registry so people know your armed or not and other countries have strict enough laws on gun ownership that criminals have been known to target home while they are occupied.
